Daijiworld Media Network – Udupi (SB)

Udupi, Jul 18: An engineering student was killed and another injured after being knocked down by a lorry at Padubidri here on Saturday July 17.

The deceased has been identified as Pooja Shetty (22), final year civil engineering student at Nitte Meenakshi Adyanthaya Institute of Technology. Her friend, Nikita Shetty (21) has sustained injuries. It is said that a speeding goods lorry ran over the duo, who were waiting for the bus by the side of the road in front of Pragati Complex, while trying to avert a collision with the express bus coming from the opposite direction.

The lorry was on its way to Mumbai from Cochin. Rash and negligent driving is said to be the reason for the mishap. The injured lorry driver Sarja Rao madhav too has been admitted to hospital by the public. Lorry cleaner Chandrakant Bheema Rao has absconded.

While Pooja passed away on the way to the hospital, Nikita has been admitted to a private hospital in Udupi town and is recovering. A case has been registered at Padubidri police station.

Pooja is the daughter of Kodetturguthu late Gopalakrishna Shetty of Kinnigoli in Mangalore taluk, while the injured Nikita is the daughter of Karunakar Shetty, a resident near garadi at Bada Yermal. The duo was on their way back home after finishing their project on on-going Nayat Residency Constructions, Padebettu here.

The deceased Pooja was a meritorious student scoring 89% in pre-university examinations. She completed her Pre-university College education at Kateel having done her schooling from Pune. Her father had died four years ago and was here residing with her mother, Arundhati. She not only excelled in academics, but was a good sportsperson being adept at karate, volleyball, kho-kho.

May God give her mother/family courage to bear this loss of her only daughter. But if we see the report its again because of the Express bus,for which the lory driver diverted his rout.Maximum number deaths accident only because of Express buses in Udupi and m'lore. For a all the petty reasons there is a bus union, for these accident no union taking responsibility.Unless law is modified or strick enough these bus drivers keep killing the same people from whom they gain lot of money.

No words can comfort the mother of the young girl who having lost her husband four years back has to face this loss now for no fault of theirs. Most of these road accidents occur because of drunken driving by Lorry Drivers on long journeys, but the government does little to check this menace. The traffic police are more concerned about collecting fines from two-wheelers for not wearing helmets than from drunken four-wheeler drivers as it requires them to do some work in checking and breath analysis etc. whereas it is easy to spot a non-helmet driver.

I hope some useless government officer does not come up with the idea of having pedestrains also wear helmets to avoid such road accidents so the government can make more money from fines. God knows how many deaths are averted by helmets, but more are snuffed out by drunken drivers. No government will ever impose prohibition, but will take to new ways to harrass two-wheeler drivers in a hurry to catch up with their chores. God bless Nikitha with a speedy recovery and good health and also bless the family of Pooja to cope up with the loss.

Very sad and quite a misfortune. What is more disturbing is, she lost her life for no fault of hers or not for a good cause. She would become a very talented and an asset to her orphaned family and our country. May her soul rest in peace. Let police take appropriate steps in educating and bringing the lorry and express bus drivers into a good moral sense by implementing stringent actions for traffic violations and also reckless drivings.

What a beutiful child lost her life. A life is lost because of rowdy and no good bus drivers. These bus drivers of Mangalore are causing so much stress on small vehicle drivers. I have a question for Students Union of Mangalore, what are you doing to safeguard the lives of your fellow members. How many students died due to bus drivers and how many more have to die? Common You young men and women, stand up and fight this menace of bus drivers. Start a group and monitor the speeding bus drivers. Stop them with the help of Police force and if needed join together and stop by yourself as a union. Everyone have a right to save their life.
I drive a lot everyday and watch with fear, the way these monster buses follow so close blowing their horns,to motor bikes. Split of second a young life will be gone under the wheels of a bus. Please,I request young people to start a co-ordinated effort and stop one more young life from death. I also request Faculty to encourage these young men to fight this nuisance because some day it might be your loved one will lay dead under the wheels of a bus. Enough is enough before it is too late.
Dear Young Citizen, act immediately.and do not hesitate because one more day gone means, one more life may be gone. God bless you and support your efforts. These are the prayers from Senior Citizen.

    Very Tragic & sad indeed!!!

Someone commented that annually 130000 people are loosig lives due to road accindents. That may be govt. statistic and actual number may be more than 500000.
While overspeeding is one obvious reason for all this, I think lack of infrastructure is the other major one. Given the traffic between Mangalore & Udupi, we should had atleast have a six lane connectivity.

Infrastructure in our country is a big zero compared to the developed countries. We hardly have roads that are comparable to those in USA. We have no infrastrcure, highest level of corruption, yet our educated people claim India will be next super power !!!

The Government rules and policies and mainly the corruption ultimately affects the people who deserve to live a better life , in the most negative way imaginable. The traffic policies in karnataka have to be changed and made more stricter, doesn matter even if anyone gets to wait in traffic for one whole day, it should apply to all, even our SO CALLED "Leaders".Hope my great great great grandchildren will live under a corruption-free government..!!!

About 130,000 perosns get killed in road accidents in India every year. Most of these are due to negligence and lack of maintenance of vehicles. There is a potential to reduce these figures by enforcing strict laws.

Those causing accidents by negligence should be barred from driving. There should be long prison terms for repeated traffic offences.

Heard someone talk about swine flu vaccine to save people. Someone promoting some pharma company. Here we have a chance to save tens of thousands every year. And sadly most of the accident victims are young. In almost all cases it is a big loss to the family and to the nation.

Hope something gets done while we grieve for this young lady.

Why dont teh authorities bring in any regulations. why do they issue permit if these buses have to compete with eachother for two minutes time gap allocated to each of them to pick their customers. since 15- 20 years these things have been happening in our district and yet no change.
