Reddy Brothers Not Responsible for Illegal Mining, says CM Yeddyurappa

New Delhi, July 18 (IANS) The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) appears to have decided to defend the Reddy brothers of Karnataka, who are under attack over allegations of illegal mining, with Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa stating here Sunday that the "Reddy brothers were not responsible for illegal mining".

Yeddyurappa's statement came after his meeting here with senior BJP leader Sushma Swaraj, who is considered close to the Reddy brothers - ministers Janardhana Reddy and Karunakara Reddy. The brothers had earlier held talks with Swaraj and Yeddyurappa in the morning in the wake of demands by the state governor and opposition parties for their resignation.

Yeddyurappa told reporters: "Let the Lok Ayukta (ombudsman) probe the entire issue. We are ready for a thorough probe of the illegal mining issue in the state from 2003."

However, he did not say anything about a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the illegal mining, which the opposition is demanding.

The Reddy brothers met the chief minister at the Karnataka Bhawan and later met with Swaraj, the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha.

Swaraj is believed to have told the brothers they should not "breach party discipline, whatever the decision is, in the interest of the party and the government".

But she also told them that the BJP will "not succumb to the pressure tactics of the Congress", an aide of Janardhana Reddy, the state tourism minister, told IANS.

A high-level meeting of the party leaders here Saturday had suggested that Swaraj should "interact and influence the Reddy brothers" to save the Karnataka ministry, the first-ever BJP government in south India, party sources said.

The Saturday meeting was attended by senior BJP leader L.K. Advani, party president Nitin Gadkari, Yeddyurappa, party general secretary Ananth Kumar, office bearers of the state unit and several state ministers.

The Reddy brothers may address a news conference later Sunday.

Janardhana Reddy told the media that they will counter the "false propaganda launched by the Congress party". "I am ready to resign if any of the allegations are proved," he told reporters. "Neither the Supreme Court, the Lok Ayukta, not even the central government has found any wrong doing by us," he claimed.

The allegations against the brothers have become a thorny issue for the BJP since Governor H.R. Bharadwaj last week asked Yeddyurappa to drop the "corrupt ministers". Bharadwaj had met President Pratibha Patil as the opposition members in the Karnataka assembly - Congress and Janata Dal-Secular MLAs - held a dharna in the house pressing for a CBI probe into the illegal mining.

"The BJP is in a tricky situation of trying to safeguard its image while not succumbing to the opposition pressure to drop the Reddy brothers from the ministry," a BJP central leader who did not want to be identified told IANS.

Yedyurappa has already given certificate that Reddys are not into illegal mining. So there is no point to have any investigation. Chief minister himself is protecting Reddys even before the commencement of investigation. Yedyurappa is helpless and is digging is own grave.

Any action against Reddys now will result in temporary setback to Yedyurappa but in the long run it will help to rebuild his image.

Yedyurappa choice is yours. Your decision will decide your future.

BJP state funds, BJP election funds and also CM's personal funds are all dependent upon Reddy's generosity. Its a matter of crores of rupees at his disposal. Yeddy is not mad to lose all this so easily. He will try his best to protect them and prove them innocent which is beneficial for himself and the Reddys and the party. There is no hidden agenda, it's a plain truth.

What we need is a stop to the illegal mining and export of iron ore. If the state government cant stop this that means they are also partners in this. By asking for a lokayukta probe for events that happened in 2003, Yediurappa is trying to divert agttention from the real issue. The lokayukta and the courts had passed orders regarding the illegal export of iron ore but cleverly this has been brushed under the carpet.  Let the illegal mining stop and the culprits bought to book be it Congress/BJP/JDS or independents.

Everything worked well for Bellary Reddy Bros till the sad demise of Rajshekar Reddy, former CM of AP. After that Yeddy got a chance to teach a lesson to Reddy's but he had no idea that the Bellary Reddy's are all that powerful. Even the present CM of AP must have played some role as Jaganmohan Reddy the son of former CM of AP is the shareholder of the Bellary Reddy's company OMC. Now Jag Reddy is taking padyatra with the interest of saving the Bellary Reddy's so that he can force the congress to the tirade against them. This is all politics. Now Yeddy is playing double game and taking the revenge for what he went through and he cannot disappoint the BJP central leadership since the Bellary Reddy's have blessings of the great Amma.

This illegal mining has cost the state Crores of Rupees in revenues which could have been used for the benefit of poor in the state. BSY by declining the CBI enquiry is doing more harm than good to BJP in the long run.
