Mangalore, Jul 21:  Vishwa Vaidya Ayurvedashram at Vamanjoor here celebrated the Karkataka Masa in a unique way.

Mid of July to mid August is observed as ‘Karkataka or Aashada Masa’.  The incessant rains during the month cool the mother earth.   The thridoshas - vatha, pittha and kapha increase in ones body due to the chill weather.

The season reduces the immunity levels and vatha causes body pain, joint pain and so on.  One might fall prey to cold, fever, digestive problems because of pittha and the rise in kapha causes cough, allergy and skin problems.

To control the seasonal changes that affect the body there was an ancient regimen called rithucharya.  This particular regimen worked out for the season is called ‘Karkataka Chikithsa’ in Kerala.  To improve the immunity levels and to prevent the onset of diseases, ‘Karkataka Ganji’ is recommended.  “Karkataka Ganji” is prepared with “Nyavara” (dark brown & small grain rice grown in Kerala region) and decoction prepared out of various medicinal plans and herbs.

The Kanji or Ganji thus prepared was consumed twice a day and special treatments of the season like Kalari Chikithsa, Bahya abhyanga, Pizhichil, Elakizhi, Avagaha Sweda, Bashpa Sweda, Special Oil & Ghee Abhyanthara Snehapana were given.

Generally people from the coastal region and Malnad have a tradition of taking the special medicine prepared from bark of a tree (Pale mara) only on “Aati Amavasya”, the amavaysa in Aashada masa to improve immunity.  However, consuming “Karkataka Ganji” twice a day throughout the “Karkataka masa” will help improve the immunity levels better.

A recent research says that the ‘Karkataka Kanji’ helps prevent cancer.  The zodiac sign of Karkataka Masa is Crab, which means Cancer and as per Ayurveda has special implications to cancer.  It is believed that during Karkataka Masa, the disease spreads slowly like cancer and manifests itself as an acute problem.

Keeping in mind the special medicinal values of “Karkataka Ganji” all those who undergo Karkataka Masa treatments will be provided with Karkataka Ganji at Vishwa Vaidya Ayurvedashram, Vamanjoor, Mangalore.
