Bangalore, July 26: Nellu Permannnur’s Konkani play, ``Kombyak Shingam Aylyar…” (If Cock Gets Horns….), which was staged at the Chowdaiah Memorial Hall in Bangalore in aid of the Education Scholarship Fund of the Konkan Catholic Association, Mathikere, received an overwhelming response from the Konkani speaking people of Bangalore on Sunday.

Konkani speaking people from different parts of Bangalore, including religious priests and nuns, thronged at the Chowdaiah Memorial Hall to enjoy the play.

KCA, Mathikere, one of the oldest and duly registered associations of Konkani speaking people in Bangalore with its own building, has already mobilised a corpus of almost Rs 20 lakh for its Education Scoholarship Fund and Medical Assistance Fund when it was set up to mark its 40th anniversary in the year 2007. The proceeds from the Konkani play will be utilised to complete the target of Rs 25 lakh, according to Association president David Fernandes.

David Fernandes informed the people that the Association had sanctioned scholarships to the tune of Rs 3.24 lakh to as many as 176 students. Another three needy persons were given medical assistance of Rs 15,000 each. ``We hope to realise our target of raising a total corpus of Rs 25 lakh this year,” he said.

He said the Association’s own building, Konkan Bhavan, provides accommodation facilities to youngsters coming to Bangalore in search of jobs or for education purposes and over the years over a 1,000 youngsters have been benefitted. ``It is a matter of pride for us, that many of our ex-hostel inmates are now comfortably settled in India and several foreign countries,” he added.

Nellu Permannur was felicitated on the occasion. The play began with a prayer dance by young Leslin Dias, an eight standard student.

Thank u David Fernandes for organizing such a wonderful play in bangalore. All the actors have done a simply great job, especially 'REKEL BAI' was superb...
I felt few people found it difficult to understand the tulu dialogues in very few scenes, but according to me the tulu characters were the best part in the play, very natural and crisp. i don't think it was necessary to explain how jeevan got the house for rent and all that stuff, any ways, the play was totally entertaining to me...of course a couple of things in the play could have been much better, but the play was not at all bad... it was a rocking evening with nellu permannur... keep going guys... all the best!

I watched Nellu's play. While the good intentions of KCA Mathikere are laudable, I honestly felt the play left much to be desired. Though the acting by some of the actors was excellent, the entire plot seemed to be heavily loaded with patriotism. It is not clear how the terrorist Jeevan got Capt Mathias' house on rent & how come the bomb-maker smokes, carries pistol & keeps making high-winded Bhashans. A bumbling botler is his only accmplice. Obviously, Nellu's terrorists are either too smart or don't know what they are doing. The so called comedy left much to be desired as unless one knows Tulu, audience couldn't understand a bit. This is more so in cities like Bangalore where the present generation struggles to speak Konkani & hardly knows Tulu. The play might be okay in Mangalore, where most of people know Tulu. All in all, I feel Nellu's kombo is good for curry on Independence Day next month.
