S Y Quraishi Takes Charge as Chief Election Commissioner

New Delhi, July 30: S Y Quraishi Friday took over as India's new chief election commissioner becoming the first Muslim in the country to occupy the post.

He takes over from Navin Chawla, who held the post for one-and-a-half years.

Quraishi had said Thursday that he was taking over the post with "great pride and humility". "I request the cooperation of all stakeholders, especially the people of this great country to fulfil my responsibilities."

Sixty-three-year-old Quraishi, who replaced Navin Chwala to become the 17th CEC, had been an election commissioner since June 30, 2006, and had been involved with the control and supervision of the presidential and vice president elections, the 2009 general elections, besides state elections.

An Indian Administrative Official of the 1971 batch, he was the secretary of the ministry of youth affairs and sports before joining the commission.

According to the Election Commiossion of India, Quraishi is an ardent proponent for strengthening the grassroots level election functionaries and has brought a special focus on people's participation, voters' education and youth involvement in the electoral process through scientific research and interventions.

The new CEC has also penned a number of books and articles on issues related to democracy, elections, HIV AIDS and family planning, social marketing, women and child development and youth.

    So what"India's new chief election commissioner becoming the first (Muslim) in the country to occupy....." why the religion and caste. It's all media potrays.Why it is title block is Muslim I will provide thousand of example see & LET US EVALUATE HOW MEDIA PORTRAYS.
    1.Times on line sept30, 2003-Muslim killed daughter for dishonour of having boy friend.
    2.The Independent U.K- Muslim husband who killed his wife & children because of their western ways.
    3.Live Leak Devote Muslim father kills daughter. There is 1000 of example i will give .Where it is mentioned Muslim.
    So what do Non-Muslim Do???
    1. Guardian.Co.UK-Father who kills their children.
    2.NYC -Nov 5, 2007-Father arrested for killing 13 months old daughter.
    3.Info-NIAC.com -Father killed his sons to make his wife suffer.
    4. Trib/Total Media- Man killed two young children . So on.
    This is media depiction of events.
    They never write Jews/ Buddhist/Hindus/Atheist/Parsis etc... killed his daughter/son etc…
    Only they write and mention if he is Muslim.
    This make you think of Muslim an Extremist and Fundamentalist.
    Let's find some more crimes…

    Comment by Aadil Khan is disgusting. Why are you bringing a issue of Hindu or Muslim? Mr. Quraishi has reached that position because of his excellance to serve this country and not to particular comminity.

    I find no difference between your comments or that of Mr. Nagesh Nayak on various issues here. People like you are only dividing this country by such comments.

    Well, Muslim or non-Muslim, we haven't seen any goodness done for Muslim community by any prominent Muslim degnitaries. They have to function as per the law of the country and cannot incline to any particular religion. We have seen Muslims holding the prime positions like the President of the country. What has it brought to the community? Nothing. So, I do not see any significance in Mr. Qureshi becoming the new Cheif Election Commioner. Good for him. That is all.
