Mangalore, Aug 2: Members of SEWA, under South Kanara Muslim welfare association (SKMWA) organised a programme at Nalapad Residency here on Sunday August 1 to distribute scholarships to deserving Muslim students.

SKMWA is a body formed by Muslim communities staying abroad to cater to the educational needs of the community. It has also assisted the poor in healthcare and undertaken other developmental works.

Mohammed Azmal began the programme with a recitation from the Quran.

SKMWA general secretary Monabba welcomed the gathering and said that the association was started in 1986 for the welfare of the Muslim community, assisting them in education, hospitalization and helping victims of natural calamities. SKMWA has managed to reach out to those at the grass root level and helped them come up in life, he added.

Dubai's Bearys cultural forum vice-president M E Muloor said that the association has been educating needy Muslims. Education gives knowledge, which would help the community to work together for the betterment of its people. The Quran says that a man without education is lifeless, he added.

Muslim educational institute president Y Mohammed Beary said that in his childhood he and his brothers struggled to go by bus to school as it cost 85 paisa, but some people helped them in their education and they became rank holders in the state. In the present Muslim community, men are lagging behind in education while the women are reaching great heights, which makes it difficult for a highly educated Muslim woman to marry a man of her level, he opined.

New age India forum president Rafiuddin Kudroli said that nowadays highly educated people are becoming terrorists as modern education teaches only about destructive subjects in science. Religious education on the other hand teaches respect for one's nation and human values which every student must imbibe, he said.

Deserving Muslim students were awarded with scholarships to encourage them to pursue higher studies.

Rahim Uchil compered and proposed the vote of thanks.

Founder president of the association Sheik Ummer, director for education, carrier guidance centre U A Ummer, Akbar Ali and Abdul Rehaman were present.
