Mangaluru, Apr 21: Aiming to contain the spread of Covid-19 and to create awareness among the public, the Dakshina Kannada district Congress Covid-19 helpline launched an awareness campaign, 'Break the Chain' here on Wednesday April 21.

Addressing a press meet at Congress Bhavan, Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) spokesperson Ivan D'Souza said, "According to experts, the pandemic will last for one-and-half years. India is also heading towards the third phase. Hence, stopping the spread is very important. So, Congress has launched the 'Break the Chain' campaign to educate people in public places."

He also said that the Congress delegation which met the deputy commissioner (DC), urged to permit the final rites of Covid-19 victims at the crematorium in Boloor and Nandigudde free of cost. "As of now, Rs 7,000 to Rs 8,000 is being charged. The district administration or the city corporation should bear the cost,” he said adding that the DC has assured him of looking into the matter.

Ivan urged the district administration to publish the name and number of the nodal officer appointed to look after the cremation process of Covid-19 victims. He also said that the district administration should identify a separate land for burial of the Covid-19 victims.

He also said that that DC informed that there is no scarcity of funds to handle the Covid-19 situation in the district.

Slamming the district administration over the shortage of stock of vaccine in the district, Ivan said, “The district in-charge minister is silent. Our district has one minister but none knows where he is. BJP MLAs are busy laying foundation stones instead of taking measures to tackle the pandemic situation.

"The state government has indirectly imposed the lockdown by imposing strict guidelines for the people in the state,” he said.

On Governor Vajubhai R Vala chairing an all-party meeting on Tuesday April 20, to take stock of the Covid-19 situation, he said, “Such an incident has never taken place in the history. When the elected representatives are in the government, why is the Governor holding the meeting? It is a constitutional breakdown and ridiculous. It is the murder of democracy.”

Ivan said that the government should provide 10 kg of rice and grocery kits to BPL card holding families and re-start Indira canteens and increase the capacity of the same.

He also said that the district Congress Covid-19 helpline will hold a free vaccination drive for all the people above 45 years on April 23 at Lions Seva Mandir from 10 am to 2 pm. The vaccination will be provided to 250 people, he said.

Hello Ivan Your motive on break the chains is very good. But kindly adhere to the PUBLIC HEALTH PRACTICES (masking, physical distancing, daily symptom screening, reduce gatherings and regular testing) when you initiate this process, especially when you are in public. You may be VACCINATED but you can not let your GUARD down. There is MISPERCEPTION by the public on this part. The public thinks COVID-19 is OVER upon vaccination and there is no need for compliance with all the public health mitigation measures. Your wife is a health care provider and you must learn from her on the TRANSMISSION DYNAMICS of COVID -19. For your kind in formation, I am currently involved in conducting genomic surveillance and transmission dynamics for COVID-19 in Toronto and we see many COVID positive cases even after receiving both the doses of vaccines. This doesn’t mean that the vaccine is ineffective. This may be because the immune response might not have kicked in or the public health measures might have been lifted off prematurely before the virus weakens its circulation within the community. Upon vaccination, if a person develops good immune response, the person can be protected (80-90%) but the person might still have the tendency to transmit the virus to others following infection, if the virus is still in circulation in the community. Also, please advocate to both the BISHOPS of Mangalore and Udupi on the TRANSMISSION DYNAMICS of COVID-19. The mass gatherings including the practices conducted during the recent holy week events in Mangalore gave me a PANIC ATTACK. Now when the COVID-19 cases are surging, I have seen the BISHOPS participating in big events like Centenary celebrations, Ursuline vows and the Ordinations etc. WITHOUT ANY COMPLIANCE with public health practices. The Bishops and the clergy should have concerns for the health and well being of catholic community in Mangalore and they should be ROLE MODELS in advocating to the community. We have already lost 6 priests within 30hrs in Ahmadabad. But it is DISAPPOINTING to note that the clergy in Kulda is still distributing communion without MASKING. This is an INAPROPRIATE practice from the leaders. The situation with COVID-19 is currently CATASTROPHIC and the worst is yet to come. Please be RESPONSIBLE for yourself and others. Good task. To break the chain everyone has to wear the mask. Mr. Ivan before launching the campaign understand what is the prime requirements to make the campaign success and first start implementinh those requirements yourself. This clearly shows You are worried about only politics and playing with the life of poor people. When government told to follow the guidelines you should have conveyed the importance of these guidelines to the people of your area..

21 days fully lockdown will save our India, Please announce lockdown 3 days before, people can buy food stuff for 21 days, Lock Means fully seal down. no one can open their Front & Back door stay at home, For health sector workers Government should arrange accommodation in hotels or proper place, Police and other warriors should leave separately in hotels or in proper place. For aged people , and poor people government should arrange the food grains before lockdown. This may help. or only cry.

'Break the Chain' - What is the point of this Campaign??? Covid is going on from 2020, it is not something new. Everyone is already aware what needs to be done to stay safe from Covid, but people don't want to follow the safety measures. So many have died and are dying everyday, but do we actually care until it is someone who is very close family member, relative or friend. If we did care, we would stop the blame game and act responsible.
