Mangalore: Solid Waste Management - Creating Awareness Agnesian Way

Mangalore, Aug 9: As a part of its continuing action plan, an awareness week on Solid waste management’ has been organized by the department of commerce, St Agnes College (Autonomous), from Monday August 9 to Friday August 13.

An Oath Taking Ceremony by the members of the executive committee of the campaign was held on the occasion. Anjali Rao of III B Com compered the programme. The reading of vison, mission and action plan was done by B Com students Supreetha, Melora and Akanksha.

Sr Marie Prem D'Souza, the principal of the college delivered her message and declared open the awareness week. Dr Devi Prabha Alva, staff co-ordinator of the programme welcomed the gathering and Shilpa Shetty proposed the vote of thanks.  This was followed by an awareness rally inside the campus at 12.00 noon.

Unfortunately the issue of Solid Waste Management has become a challenge. It is a common site that garbage is thrown out everywhere without any civic sense, which causes serious health hazards both to human beings and animals. The fact is population living in the urban area produces much more solid waste than in the rural area. In this regard, the immediate need of the hour is to create awareness and to educate people about the importance of effective management of solid waste.

Hence, the students of St Agnes have taken up this sensitive issue as its extension activity.  It can be recalled that a Community Awareness Campaign (CAC) on Solid Waste Management (SWM) was inaugurated at the college by the Mangalore City Corporation commissioner Dr Vijay Prakash on March 23.
