Mangalore, Aug 11: A seminar on ‘Zakaat’ was organized by Voice of Quran Mangalore at Town Hall on Tuesday August 10.

Charity in Islam is known as Zakaat, and is one of the pillars on which rests the socio economic and religious structure of Islam. It is only second to regular prayers (Salaah). Allah has made Zakaat mandatory says the Holy Quran.

Mansoor Ahmed Azad, convener, Voice of Quran, welcomed the gathering and H I Abusufyan Madani, chairman, Voice of Quran, presided over the function.

Chancellor of Yenopoya University Y Abdullah Kunhi inaugurated the programme and in his inaugural speech said that all Jamath committees should be aware of proper distribution of wealth and ensure that it does not remain with just a few.

Adding to this, he said that the meaning of Zakaat has to reach every Muslim as we still see widows, old people, and handicapped of the community begging on the roads, which does not serve the purpose of Zakath.

Bekal Ustad, addressing the gathering, said that Zakath has to be distributed without delay and it should not be limited to the period of ‘Ramadan’ as it is a year long process. “Unlike taxes, Zakaat is the exclusive privilege of the poor and cannot be used for any other purpose”, he said.

Ustad added that Zakaat was mandatory for all the messengers of Allah in the past too; it was also an important part of Muslim law in the past too, which has been followed in history and has to be followed by every Muslim and the person who practices Zakaat will be blessed.

Ashraf Madani proposed the vote of thanks.
