Major Fire Breaks Out at Bunder, Goods Worth Rs 30 Lac Destroyed

Mangalore, Aug 14: A major fire broke out at Shri Durga Distributors, a sanitary materials godown in Bunder, enveloping the surrounding area with smoke at around 3 pm on Saturday August 14.

The huge godown was stocked with ceramic tiles, commodes, and wash basins. The reason for the fire is not yet clear, but it is suspected that it might have been caused by short circuit.

Property worth Rs 30 lac has been destroyed but the timely arrival of the fire service helped prevent the fire from spreading to neighbouring property.

Speaking to Daijiworld, regional fire service officer Basavanna said that the timely arrival of the fire service team from Kadri and Pandeshwar fire stations helped in preventing further damage. Six fire engines with 40 firemen struggled hard to extinguish the fire.

“There were no injuries and casualties inside the godown,” said Basavanna. However, he denied that short circuit was the cause of the fire and said that the godown was badly maintained.

The congested roads in the area also posed problems to the fire service vehicles attempting to reach the spot on time.

Many fire service officials suffered burns on their hands as they were shifting the goods to a safer place in an attempt to protect the remaining property

Chief fire service officer of Mangalore HS Varadarajan also visited the site and said that the godown was not properly maintained.
