Udupi, Aug 15: A fibre glass sculpture of Mahatma Gandhi, built at a cost of Rs 4.5 lac, was installed at the beach on Sunday August 15.

The statue, which is six feet tall, weighs about 150 kg and has been installed on a six feet high stone pedestal.

District-in charge minister Dr V S Acharya inaugurated the statue and said that the state’s department of tourism has sanctioned a grant of Rs 50 lac for developing Malpe beach as a measure to attract more tourists. Deputy commissioner Hemalata, D V Sadananda Gowda, Udupi-Chikmagalur MP and former state president of BJP, MLA K Raghupathi Bhat, Yashpal Suvarna, president, Dakshina Kannada and Udupi district fisheries marketing federation, and sculptor of the statue Purushotham Adve were among the guests present at the function.

    Fathima.,

Mahatma Gandhi, known as Bapu is not a political leader.

In fact if he were to be alive, he would not have been a member or leader of the congress party.

As a matter fact, Gandhiji wanted the congress to be dissolved soon after achieving the object for which it was formed, to get indipendence.

    Dr Kiran Acharya, Manipal,
In this news we see only very few people present during the inauguration. That too on independence day! Where are the children? ( I did not ask anybodies religion- its not proper)
Malpe beach people come over there to relax, enjoy, play, entertainment, etc . So It is suitable when someone wanted to erect statue of CHARLIE CHAPLIN there. Do you GandhiJI statue all over the world. They do not object. why? Why you see religion? Live Simply good citizen.
Charlie Chaplin was born to actor/musician parents. For most of his life he didn't really practice any religion aside from theater and film. Bowman records that Chaplin received his name "at the font", so he was apparently baptized into the Church of England as an infant. During some years while Chaplin was a child his mother brought him to weekly Anglican church services. As an adult, Chaplin's background was clearly Christian, but he was not actively religious in a traditional sense. Chaplin died in his sleep in Vevey, Switzerland on Christmas Day 1977.
On 1 March 1978, his corpse was stolen by a small group of Swiss mechanics in an attempt to extort money from his family. The plot failed, the robbers were captured, and the corpse was recovered eleven weeks later near Lake Geneva. His body was reburied under 6 feet (1.8 m) of concrete to prevent further attempts

It is easy to say that "we should follow Gandhi's principles, than erecting statues".

How many of us following his principle of "Vegetarianism". When the Karnataka Govt introduced the Anti Cow Slaughter Bill, all minority group cried as if their life is gone. This is also included in the Constitution of India.

This home minister neither has shame or feels guilty, when he knows very well that his leader Godse killed Gandhi. This is reason why doctors are murdered now-days because doctors do not remain doctor rather a butcher in this case ACHARYI supported people to attack churches and those harmless nuns. A good doctor will not abandon his profession that because I am a professional my self. Doctors Hypocrisy.

Charlie Chaplin episode is a dead horse. We now know that the director of "international" fame neither had money/plan nor permissions for the said statue. It was a publicity stunt!! In the process of defaming the govt, they forgot a small point- Charles Chaplin was not a christian! (he is a Jew!). Controversies apart, where is proposed statue/ movie by your "internationally" acclaimed director? If I read the news right, it was supposed to come up in innovative film city within 3 months of controversy at Baindoor!!!

I think time has come to stop the culture of erecting the statues of political leaders. Already we have plenty of them in our country. Also stop naming/renaming of places or structures that are built using taxpayer money!
