Bengaluru, May 26: The state high court has allowed the petitioners who have questioned the validity of the appointment of a minor as the head of Shiroor Mutt Udupi by Sode Mutt Swamiji, to file revised petition by amending the prayers contained in the petition suitably.

A petition filed by the secretary of Shiroor Mutt Bhakta Samiti, P Latavya Acharya and three others came before the division bench of the high court headed by Chief Justice, A S Oka, on Tuesday May 25.

The bench which examined the details of relief sought, observed that this is out and out a private petition and it cannot be considered in the ambit of public interest litigations.

Advocate for the petitions, D R Ravishankar, arguing the case, said that a 16-year old has been appointed as the successor to the Mutt. He argued that the rights of a minor have been violated here. He said that the prayers contained in the petition will be modified and sought time to do the same.

The bench orally noted that the issue of minor rights has been raised in the petition and felt that the government should not remain a mute spectator to such things. It adjourned the hearing to June 2 after allowing the petitioners to file an amendment petition.
