Bantwal, May 29: An agriculturist of Balthila village in the taluk made new experiment of producing compost from Cavendish banana as he did not get suitable price for his produce in the market.

As the plantain sucks potash from the earth in considerable amount, the agriculturist Mahesh Padyana thought that its fruit will also have potash in large quantities. So he says that it is better to convert that into manure rather than selling for low price in the market.

Mahesh had grown 1,200 plantain of Cavendish in the midst of arecanut plants on 3.5 acre of land. He had plan of removing the plantain trees once the arecanut plant grows to a good extent. Though he had plan of getting two crops of plantain, his calculation did not work due to lockdown and other Covid -19 related issues. So he thought of producing manure out of raw plantains.

Mahesh has covered the heap of 30 plantain bunches with grass and other leaves. After sprinkling two baskets of cow dung water on the heap and keeping it closed for few days will turn it into good manure.

“As potash and micronutrients are more in plantain it is suitable to make manure. Instead of complaining to the government of no rate in the market and no market for the produce, I have thought of this experiment,” says Mahesh.
