Mangalore Aug 21: Konkani Sangh celebrated Konkani Manyata Divas at St Aloysius College on Saturday Aug 21.

Speaking on the occasion, Mandd Sobhann gurkaar Eric Ozario said that Konkani language though having history of thousands of years needs to be developed by the Konkani speaking community. Konkani is a secular language as it is spoken by Hindus, Muslims and Christians, but sadly community members instead of patronising Konkani at home converse in English or any other language. This has given birth to a new language Konglish, a mix of Konkani and English with younger generation having no clue of Konkani in its original form, he remarked.

Ozario stressed that celebrating Konkani Manyata Divas once a year doesn't serve any purpose if Konkani is not spoken by the community members. He had a word of praise for sangh for doing a great job of developing the language.

Young Konkani litterateur Avina Mendonca said that the young generation is forgetting the Konkani words and asked to take a leaf out of Kannadigas on how to frame sentences in pure Kannada which will help the youngsters to perfect Konkani.

Konkani Sangh president Sevrin Pinto welcomed the gathering. Konkani litterateur Gladys Rego and secretary of Konkani Sangh Nevil D’Souza among others were present.

It is a great encouragement and blesing for Konkani that such activities are held. Unfortunately, Shaktinagar being out of town a bit, and lack of awareness to the ordinary Konkani lovers, particularly the elders and those who are free, they loose the oppertunity to witness such lovely events. Put yiur heads together and make things easier for the ordinary participants too. Dev Bore Korun!
