Bengaluru, Jun 1: Taking time off to concentrate on non-Covid related matters for a change, chief minister B S Yediyurappa on Monday reviewed the functioning of Bengaluru Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) and asked the officials to take urgent steps to bring down the wastage of water from a high of 36% to 20%.

"There is an urgent need to draw up a suitable action plan to bring down the wastage and leakage of water and thereby save the precious resource,’’ he said.

The chief minister asked the officials to prepare necessary precautionary plans in view of the onset of monsoon to meet any emergency.

The BWSSB officials informed the chief minister that out of the 110 villages in the city outskirts which had been linked to the BWSSB as many as 51 villages have already been provided with drinking water supply lines and the remaining 59 villages will be covered by the end of next year. The underground drainage work in the villages was nearing completion.

The Cauvery Phase 5 drinking water supply project to bring 775 million litres per day (MLD) to the city taken up at cost of Rs 5,550 crore is expected to be completed by 2023. All the works were progressing as per schedule, the chief minister was informed.

Chief minister’s additional chief secretary, Dr E V Ramana Reddy and Urban Development Department additional chief secretary, Rakesh Singh and BSWWB chairman, N Jayaram and other senior officers were present.
