Bangalore: Mangaloreans, Shobha and Aaron D’Souza, Among Ekalavya Awardees

Bangalore, Aug 28: Power lifter, Shobha, and swimmer, Aaron D’Souza, have been chosen for the Ekalavya sports award for the year 2009. A total of 15 sportspersons have been selected for the Ekalavya Award.

The names of those nominated for the awards was announced by minister for youth services and sports, Gulihatti Shekhar, here on Friday August 27. These awards will be presented by the state Governor, at a function to be held at the Raj Bhavan on August 29 on the occasion of hockey legend, Dhyan Chand’s birth anniversary. The award carries Rs 50,000 in cash, a brass memento, scroll and a blazer.

Aaron D'Souza

Kushal Ravikumar (basketball), M S Tejkumar (chess), Savita S Goudar (cycling), Arun Maribashetty (equestrian), Bindu N (fencing), Raghuath V R (hockey), Jayanti L (Kabaddi), Srinivas M (kho kho), Madhavi Giri (swimming), Somanath S Girigowda (volleyball), Smita B Patil (wrestling), Jnana Lakshmi Devi (weightlifting) and Raghavendra Ratnakar Anvekar (handicapped swimmer), are the other personalities picked for the award. Judo coach, M H Triveni, and fencing coach, Deban Singh, have been selected for the lifetime awards for 2009.

Shobha

While young Aaron has been putting up an impressive performance at the Senior National Aquatic Championship presently in progress at Jaipur, Shobha, working in Pandeshwar police station in Mangalore, has been a consistent performer in the power lifting circles, and her excellent performance at the 2009 Commonwealth Power Lifting Championship held at Pune in December 2009 had won her nationwide laurels.
