Mangaluru: 'Patrode' earns place in Ayush list of traditional, beneficial dishes

Mangaluru, Jul 3: 'Patrode', a popular dish of coastal Karnataka and Malnad region that is made from Colocasia (taro) leaves, has been recognized by the union Ayush ministry as a traditional food under Ayush system of medicines.

The ministry has prepared a booklet in which names of 26 food items have been listed. Patrode has occupied a place of pride in this list. This booklet is also available in the website of the department now. Along with each of the items listed, photos, recipe, and health benefits have been listed.

Patrode is also popular in Kerala, Maharashtra, Goa, Himachal Pradesh, Gujarat and North East states.

The ministry says that the taro leaves are rich in iron which helps in improving the haemoglobin level. It assists in reducing long term inflammation in case of paralysis. The leaves also have vitamin C and beta carotene in considerable quantities, the department says.

Some of the items included in the list of food items that are healthy and have medicinal properties and which are also popular also in Karnataka are Patrode, Ragi and banana juice, red rice gruel, beetroot halwa, buttermilk, rice pancake, bottle gourd idli, chilli chutney, millet, drumsticks leaves dosa.

    Neptune Mangalore ,not all types of colacasia leaves are meant for PatrodeThey have to be pluck previous day and left one day to fade .When they are fresh itches ,thatswhy they add a small amount of tamarind to the mixture.I dont know adding Thaikulo.but only colacasia cut in small pieces.without stemm.with rice and red chilli coconut ,jeera ,pepper.May be thaikulo is added when not sufficient leaves are available.During Monti feast demand is high.

    Patrode dishes made of fresh leaves grown in the rain soaked Male Nadu soil are one of the best tasting ones on this planet! I have been eating and enjoying them for the past many decades far away in my adopted land.!

    Santhan, Pathrade are made out of some wild grown seeds leaves called Thaikulo ? Also, from ripe Jack fruit ? Oh my mouth started watering. Old generation had good knowledge and all tradituonal recipes are taken away by fast food variety😫

    Pathrode from colocasia leaves. Have to cut off the stems in leaves also( causes itch in some people). Jackfruit leaves are used to wrap jackfruit, rice, grated coconut and jaggery .

    Jackfruit . Patholi.. rice jaggery coconut jackfruit mixture. And thaikulo makes a yummy green leafy dish and amazing chutney also.

    In tulu Patherade means "don't talk"; it's my favorite.., couple of spicy chopped pieces fried with with butter and one tight oggarane ...., and to my right side a glass of kingfisher brand liquid ... watching outside of my terrace facing arabian sea... on a rainy day...., a real experience of heaven on earth...,
