Mangalore Sep 9: The city is all set to celebrate Ganesh Chaturthi with preparations for the festivals going on in top gear everywhere.

The creative hands of the artists have come up with varieties of Ganesha idols with just the final touches pending. The finished work is sure to attract a large number of people.

Ganesh Chaturthi, also known as Vinayak Chaturthi in North India will be celebrated on Saturday September 11 this year to mark the birthday of the lord of wisdom, prosperity and good fortune Ganesha. It is believed that lord Ganesha visits the houses of the devotees on the auspicious day of Ganesh Chaturthi and takes away their sorrows, bestowing on them blessings of happiness, prosperity and good fortune.

People celebrate the festival as a community or individually in their homes. Cultural programmes will be organized in several areas to mark the festival. People distribute sweets to neighbours and sugarcane is kept on either sides of the houses to welcome lord Ganesha with laddus, modaks and various vegetarian dishes. Lord Ganesha will be offered “sahasranama” service, meaning chanting of thousand names, each name with different meaning.

Lord Ganesha’s idol made of clay will be carried in a long procession with tableau accompanied by people shouting 'Ganapati Bappa Moriya' and will be immersed in the nearby lake, river or sea.
