New Delhi: Kalmadi Accepts Blame for CWG Mess - India's Image Dented, says Fennell

New Delhi, Sep 25 (IANS) After days of denial, Commonwealth Games Organising Commitee (CGOC) chairman Suresh Kalmadi Saturday accepted the blame for the mess surrounding the Oct 3-14 event, but cushioned this by saying the government agencies had not delivered the infrastructure on time.

Commonwealth Games Federation chief Mike Fennell, too, blew hot and cold, saying the controversies around the Games have dented India's image but that "we all have to share the blame".

On his part, Commerce and Industry Minister Anand Sharma criticised nations like Australia, New Zealand, Canada and England for finger-pointing at the manner in which India was handling the Commonwealth Games, the country's biggest sporting event since the 1982 Asiad, and warned that they may have to pay a price in terms of business opportunities in the emerging economy.

Addressing a packed media conference at the swanky Main Press Centre of the Commonwealth Games, Kalmadi said: "The role of the Organising Commitee is the conduct of the Games. I am not involved in the construction. Construction is not my responsibility. Yes, monitoring is my responsibility. As OC chairman, we take all the blame on us. But venues were handed to us late."

When prodded by the foreign media, Kalmadi shot back that not everything was hunky dory at previous Games like in Manchester in 2002.

"In Manchester in 2002, we stayed at a University. We never complained. You have seen the venues here. They are world class, they are as good as Melbourne. The Games Village is fine. Yes, there are some issues with the Village, but the international zone, the food, the kitchen are good," he insisted.

"There were some problems with some of the towers and the cleaning up is being done. We are trying our best. You talk to me after the Games," said a beleagured Kalmadi with Michael Fennell and CGF CEO Michael Hooper sitting by his side.

"We still have eight days to go and we will in another couple of days finish all the work."

Asked why work at the Village lagged behind, Kalmadi said: "I don't think the OC is respinsoble for it. The last 18 towers were handed to us just three days back and we have been working on these Games for the last few years. I wish all the venues were handed over to me earlier. We would have done a better work."

Addressing the same press conference, Fennell said "damage" has been done to India's image and hoped that lessons have been "learnt" from the controversies surrounding the preparations.

"A lot of damage has been done to India. People are asking: 'Should we come to India?' India is the largest Commonwealth country. At the end of this all, India would have learnt a lesson. And we have also learnt our lessons working with a country like India," Fennell maintained.

"We all have to share the blame. We will work together to see that everything falls in place. Yes, we all have had problems. We will be overcoming these problems. On hindsight, a number of these things could have been avoided. We have to take necessary corrective measures."

Fennell also said he was happy with the efforts put in the last couple of days and hoped that India will be able to pull it off. "Considerable progress has been made since the prime minister has asked the Cabinet Secretary to look into it."

"But there are concerns which remain, mainly related to cleanliness," he said.

"What is clear is that the massive amount of work being done now ought to have been done before. What we are concentrating on now is to get it ready so that the teams can enjoy best comforts," he said.

Pointing out at the concerns expressed by the chefs de mission, he outlined that a series of work including transport, security arrangements, fire safety and technological problems like Wi-Fi connections still remained to be resolved.

Fennell lauded the food arrangements and the international centre at the Village.

"The international centre is finished and in good shape. The food is excellent, which is very important for preparing athletes."

Minister Anand Sharma told the media in Ottawa after meeting his Canadian counterpart Peter Van Loan: "It would be a mistake not to engage with India with respect. When it comes to business, who's loss would it be?"

Slamming the foreign media for "running a campaign" against India over its handling of the Games, the minister said: "Dated and frozen images, exaggeration, trying to run down a country is not acceptable to us."

A visibly angry Sharma said India is an emerging economic power as well as the largest democracy in the world and the Commonwealth.

Hitting out at the international athletes who have pulled out of the Games citing health and security reasons, Sharma said: "Maybe either they are not confident of winning the medals or they will lose out."

Meanwhile, the New Zealand Olympic Committee has announced that its team would participate in the Commonwealth Games.

The country's delegation, which looked into the situation at the Games' Village and also took stock of the safety measures for the athletes, gave its approval Friday night.

Some 7,000 participants and officials from 71 countries and territories are expected to attend the Commonwealth Games.

    Ms/Mrs??Shweta,

Dont be silly!!! Is there any confirmation on this forum that your name is for real.So stop questioning anybody if they have given their real name or not, it's individuals wish.

Mr.Raj Ullal,Let's talk sense, no point waguely mentioning/arguing about something.

What's BJPs development in Karnataka??? Till date BJP Govt has not built a single proper house for people from Northern Karnataka who suffered from massive floods last year.

NGO's like Maata Amritaanandamayi and Dr.Veerendra Heggade have built & handed over more than 100 houses each.Shame on BJP Govt in Karnataka!!!

Some of the BJP Pseudos are saying Gujarat would have organised CWG better.BJP Govt in Karnataka couldn't build a single home so BJP people in Karnataka should surrender before Modi and ask him to re-build housing for Northern Karnataka people Ha Ha Ha!!!

It appears to me, when projects were awarded to these contractors there was no agreements for work to complete or work to accomplish on certain deadlines covered by penalties for failures. When contractors are hand in gloves with authorities, you come across delays completing projects. Enough of BS these people perform. Lets get over and start the CWG on time.

Why didn’t they hand over the venue of CWG much earlier, to Mr. Kalmadi? Why, of all the times, the rain gods have to be so ruthless while the work was on such tight schedule? Why, as usual, these four nations – Aaustralia, N.Z, U.K. and Canada- are so very vociferous in criticizing, when they treat some Indians badly in Australia, put Indian athletes in Universities in U.K. and have always green eyes on India’s economic progress, which at present stands 2nd highest in the world. Why only Europeans are so very demanding while the other nations are not?

When the European leaves Gulf for good, where does he stay? A five star hotel: and when the Indian leaves gulf, where does he stay? A friendly neighbour or a countryman? Where do our Indian workers in the Gulf stay? Didn’t you see them sleeping even in toilets? Which nation comes to their succour? I was in the airport the other day in Lucknow, and was almost in tears to see worker after worker returning from the Gulf with just a small bundle hurriedly packed with some small presents either to a wife or children, and clinging to their passports as if it is some precious possession with emaciated looks and may be equally emaciated purses!! Their return was for good.
Please, now, stop bickering and remain united when we are about to start the games and support the organizers if not please remain quiet.

Is there a punishment imposed on the so called CWG officials aka goons? I have not heard a word.....They should be ripped in public eye for causing such a disgrace to the country. Unless the system is cleansed no matter what world thinks of India and how shameful this all sounds, nothing can change. When the new govt came to power

I really thought that the young lot in the govt would not be money mongers and will work towards improving the 'Brand India' but on the contrary things have gone to drain. Look how China pulled through Olympics with such a grace. Now Olympics will be a dream for India for probably the next millennium.

Every nation gets the same duration for the preparation , as its a programmed meet.CWG had enough time for the preparation,it is a total failure of congress governement in the centre & Delhi. Both are equally responsible & proved themselves corrupt & irresponsible. In no contrast we should contest again for hosting such an event, as we proved to the world that we are intelligent when serving the other nations as expats, but when it comes to our own we lack dedication & look only at making our pockets full.Though Kalmadi is not only one to blame , he must immediately step down .He was the one who served in such a position for years, despite which could only bring disgrace for the nation when it was time to shoulder the responsibility.Shame on the Congress .let them give up any further thought of hosting any events in future for making money out of it.

I agree Kalmadi is being made Bakra and all the real culprits are hiding. What surprises me is BJP have not started shouting CBI inquiry ? Answer It was Bjp government that paid 70,000 $ as bribe. They could not afford to buy good weapons during Kargil war but could pay bribe.India requires a Army General like Mushraf to rule India for ten years only then will India reach its zenith. All these politicians and so called nationalist should be hung on meat hooks in the market square in Kashmir.

The word 'handicap' used for Mr Reddy is bit of harsh and uncalled for.Handicap is god's gift and any body could be handicaped if god wills. If the word used for handicap in dealing with CWG resposibilities may be justified but not for Reddy as he is really handicaped.

Indian olimpic Chairman, Mr Kalamadi,Delhi govt,Sports Ministry and for some extent Mr Reddy's Urban Development ministry are responsible for the confusion and mess in the arrangement of CWG-2010.Out of estimated RS 70,000 crores 60 to 70 percent spent on infrastructure fecilities in Delhi and around. We DCWG-2010 a grand success.

We have another few days to go and I hope by then everything will fall in places and the CWG will happen to be a grand success. Nevertheless, the athletes of few snobby nations should not have withdrawn their name on flimsy reasons instead they should have understood our difficulties, given us a chance and tried to overcome few shortfalls to boost our morale. Mr. Anand Sharma looks like a serious man. Mr. Sharma you should be showing your anger towards your friend Kalmadi. Mr. Sharma better you don't threaten them coz they are already a developed country and India is not.
Why did no country complain about anything in Bejing, South Africa? The Asian Games to be held in Gungzou in China in Nov, the venue and the village is complete n handed over.
What a joke it is to say we are an emerging economic power. Number wise yes coz we cannot count our population but otherwise we are a zero.
What a disgrace that we had seven years in hand to do the job and we say we will do it in 7 days.
We can take short cuts, bribe, curruption etc, it all works in India but sorry not at International level.
