UAE: Max Rasquinha Exhorts Budding Docs to Blend Medicine with Humanism

Ras Al Khaimah (UAE), Sep 27: Max Rasquinha, past divisional governor of Toastmasters International, delivered a talk on 'The Blending of Values with a Spirit of Humanism in Health Sciences Education' at the Ras Al Khaimah Medical and Health Sciences University here on Tuesday September 26.

Addressing a gathering that comprised about 450-500 students and faculty, Max stressed on the need for humanistic touch in the medical professionals in a fast changing world.

Citing exemplary models of humanism namely Mahatma Gandhi, Nelson Mandela, Martin Luther King jr and Mother Teresa, Max said that their lives touch our conscience and bring in us a spirit of awakening towards humanism.

He said that medical professionals can take decisions that are life saving and life enhancing. A foetus in the mother’s womb is diagnosed of a cyst, operated upon and safely placed back, enabling it to grow into a healthy newborn. Miracles such as the birth of septuplets and so much more is possible. The world needs a humane treatment of ailments more than mere cure, he said.

He called upon the youth to meet new challenges and imbibe in themselves the values of humanism while caring for the sick.

In another session Max Rasquinha conducted a demonstration meeting of the upcoming “RAKMHSU Spectrum Toastmasters Club.” He elaborated on the importance of a toastmasters club in an educational institution.

    A caring and compassionate health care professional can bring a faster healing to the patient with the
    medicine, than another non-caring health professional with non-compassionate attitude with the same medication.

    As the modern medicine is getting far more high tech with an array of computer connected electronic
    gadgets, machines are dealing more with the patients, and the medical professionals are touching the
    patients less.

    Words are powerful tools, and the medical profession will have to display more healing touch and deliver comforting words to hurting patients to speed up their healing process.

    Good advise and I think most all Health Care Professional do practice the same. It is hard to satisfy every individual by the health care team due to some reason like religious belief, trust with the medical team, therapeutic time and it effects and the cost. In medical professional every one treated as a patient and needy one and I think 99.99% of the medical team always put their maximum effort to save the life and help to recover their health back soon.
