Bengaluru, Aug 22: JD(S) supremo and former Prime Minister Deve Gowda on Sunday August 22 said that his party will hold a padayatra for the implementation of contentious Mekedatu and Mahadayi projects.
Addressing a press conference in the city, Deve Gowda said, "It has been decided to hold the padyatra after the end of the assembly session. In addition, we will also draw the attention of the government towards the sharing of Almatti river water.
"Protest is inevitable to protect the interests of the state. That is why our party is taking a step forward in this direction. It will be difficult for me to do the foot march. So I will flag off the march symbolically. This protest is not about our party but as a regional party, issues of all the three rivers should be resolved.
"Some people are saying that our party has no strong presence in the state and is just taken into consideration as per the political situation prevailing in Karnataka. For such people we will show our strength through this protest. Former chief minister Kumaraswamy also has said the same thing. I will also partake in that fight. We will not accuse the government while protesting. We have decided to bring our party to the forefront through this protest. We do not have any animosity towards anyone," he said.
Speaking on the subject of verbal attack between Congress and BJP over Nehru and Vajpayee, Gowda said, “It is not right to speak in that fashion. If they think that the image of their party will be built by giving such statements, then they are in for an illusion.
"Parliament session was wasted without any fruitful discussion. However, in between chaos many ordinances were passed, and nobody got the time and opportunity to speak. Discussion should have been held on many serious issues. I feel pained and hope that it does not happen,” said Deve Gowda.
Gowda further said, "When Kumaraswamy was the CM, he formed ‘Badavara Bandhu’ programme to prevent the street hawkers from being fleeced by people who offer finance at higher rates. Was it not good? But Congress and BJP did not say anything on this. People also did not demand. But we will continue our efforts. It requires the blessings of God also.
"CM Bommai had visited my house. His father and I have jointly fought for many causes. I asked Bommai to visit me whenever he is in trouble. Their high command has asked him to get everyone into confidence and run the government. Will I give my party on lease to Congress and BJP? I am saying sincerely that we have decided not to form a government with Congress at all. But now those discussions are not needed,” concluded the former PM.
