Canada: Ligers Lift Trophy in MFSI Cricket Tourney

Media Release

Canada, Sep 29: The powerful ‘Ligers’ clinched the prestigious MFSI Trophy in the MFSI Cricket Tournament, a long awaited tournament by Indian Cricket enthusiasts held at the Earnscliffe Recreation Centre, Brampton organized by the Mangalorean Friendship Series Initiative here in Mississauga here, recently.

MFSIs biggest cricket event to date, the third Annual 7-A-Side cricket tournament held at the Earnscliffe Recreation Centre, Brampton was an undiluted success. From the get-go teams were just pouring in until the full complement the sponsors and organizers hoped for was quickly fulfilled. Sixteen mixed teams with players aged 10 to 60 did the day proud as they put up sterling performances throughout the day with more than a couple of matches going down to the wire. There’s an adrenaline rush in healthy competitive sport especially when you face head on an opponent going full tilt at you giving away nothing and asking for no favours in return.

Ligers Cricket team proved time and again that they were a fighting young unit. They moved comfortably from the first round to the winners spot without so much as braking stride. There were 15 matches that decided the undisputed winner helped along by an enthusiastic crowd of supporters with family and friends backing each four, sixer or wicket. An accomplished team of commentators Olympio Fernandes, Melwyn Menezes, Irvin D'Souza and Nelson Menezes took it upon themselves to entertain the crowd with what was unfolding in the middle. It rained 54 sixes and 56 scorching fours to a 55 yard boundary and a splendid hatrick by Sherwin of Mumbai Dinchuks…something that would make any accomplished cricket team proud. The umpiring professionally conducted by Ronnie Fernandes and Ravi Cornelius hardly elicited a murmur from any of the teams.

MFSI which is organized and sponsored by Wilson D'Souza (Bank of Montreal) and Reynold Sequeira (Re/max) thanks all those who gladly volunteered their time and services to set up the tournament.  Volunteer team of score keepers in Orlando Lewis,Cynthia Lewis, Paul Mathias, Maxim D’Mello and Karan Sequeira dis a splendid job. Rudy D’Souza organized effective sound system.

The Mangalorean community in Mississauga feels proud of the champions.  Wilson D’Souza (BMO) and Reynold Sequeira (Re/max) the dynamic organizers made this event truly remarkable with dedication and hardwork.
