Mangalore Remains Peaceful, Police Close Shops as Precaution

Mangalore, Sep 30: Thursday September 30, pehaps the most anxiously awaited day of the year, passed off calmly and peacefully in the city.
Thanks to tight police security in every nook and corner of the city, there were no major untoward incidents or clashes and the day went on smoothly. The police also made preventive arrests of 65 potential troublemakers in sensitive areas such as Ullal, Panambur and Suratkal.
However, soon after the verdict was pronounced by the Allahabad High Court at around 4.30 pm, some people gathered at Car Street here and burst fireworks. But the police immediately arrived on the spot and dismissed the crowd.
Most shops in the city were closed, and even office-goers decided to stay home during the latter part of the day, though officially there was no such order. The city wore a deserted look and even the usually busy main streets were devoid of traffic. The number of local buses plying on the roads too reduced considerably, while buses to distant routes were cancelled altogether.
As per latest report, police have begun to close shops in the city for the night as a precautionary measure.
