Mangalore City Corporation to Sign MOU with Canadian City

Mangalore, Oct 2: The development concept adopted by the Mangalore City Corporation (MCC) as well as infrastructure including airport, railway stations and the sea port have grabed the attention of the Corporation of Delta, British Columbia, Canada. 

It is a pride for the citizens of Mangalore that Mayor of Corporation of Delta Louise Jackson along with a team of officials will arrive in Mangalore and sign a historic Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with MCC Mayor Rajani Dugganna aiming at putting collaborative effort and initiative to develop two cities with a ‘twin city’ concept.

MCC is all set to extend a traditional welcome to Louise Jackson and her team including Chief Administrative Officer George Harvie and Administrative Manager Mangit Kiala, who will arrive in Mangalore on October 11. Speaking to City Herald, MCC Commissioner Dr K N Vijayaprakash said that the main objective of their visit is to build a bi-lateral relationship, wherein best practices of both cities will be exchanged. “Both mayors will sign an MoU on October 12, which is aimed at development of cities economically, educationally and to exchange the cultural values. Collaborative efforts will be made and initiatives will be taken to foster cross-cultural exchange.

The tourism potential in both cities will be linked and technology available in the agriculture and other sectors will be exchanged,” he said adding that discussions will be held with officials and elected representatives and later Louise Jackson will also interact with the mediapersons.

An eight-page brochure will be prepared by the MCC to highlight the cultural, economical and educational significance of Mangalore City and it will be handed over to the Mayor of Corporation of Delta, Vijayaprakash said. The team will be in Mangalore for three days and will leave the City on October 14 after visiting important places, he added.

Why Mangalore?

Explaining how Mangalore has been chosen by the Corporation of Delta for visit, Vijayaprakash said that it was a presentation on Mangalore City’s development made by former Mayor M Shanker Bhat at Bangkok in 2009 prompted the officials of Corporation of Delta to choose the City for the implementation of collaborative develoment programme.

Shanker Bhat said that Mangalore City was one of the four cities in India, which were short-listed from 120 cities across the world by the British Columbia Trade and Cultural Development Foundation.

The Foundation, which has offices in New Delhi, Bangalore and Chennai, is working with an obective of linking cities. Though there were Vishakhapatnam, Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram in the shortlist, Mangalore has been chosen finally since the City has all infrastructure including sea port, international airport and railway stations.

Further, advancement in the education sector too has attracted the attention of the Foundation, Bhat said. The team from Corporation of Delta was expected to visit Mangalore in February 2009. However, due to technical reasons, the visit has been delayed, he added.

    1. Look at Corporation buidling, looks marvellous in pic, but in reality - pathetic. Over-invoiced, inferior material cast building

    2 Look at the proposed Fish market. This structure is suitable for Urva kind of market, not the main jetty or bunder area.

    3.Roads are at 1/2 meter higher altitude than the collars of the road. No need to think of good bus shelter, etc.,

    4. Drainage virtually does not exist. If exists on the road sides of newly built concrete roads, serves only for accounting purposes.

    5. If there is a proper vision, atleast the city centre would get permission for architecturally marvellous building construction with minimum road widths defined.

    6. Link between Road tax and Road work should be established for proper utilization of funds. Current funding does not even cater filling of too frequent potholes.

    List goes on. I am sure, the British Columbia has a problem with its too diverse ethnic ratio. Mangalore has a diverse administration differences. The only commonality is that they are coastal towns with hilly terrains and sea ports.

    When, our roads will become like the roads of those advance countries?
    Why cannot we have Mumbai-Pune Expressway like roads inside our city?
    Why cannot be straightened the sharp bents in the bye-lanes?
    Why cannot we have multi-storey car park buildings on prominent roads?
    Why cannot we stop the institution buses from waiting on the narrow bye lanes for hours to pick-up students?
    Why cannot we stop heavy vehicles and city buses entering the city-center between 8 am and 8 pm?
    Why cannot we stop over-loaded Lorries and Buses dangerously plying on the roads?
    Why cannot we stop the rash drivers of city buses speeding dangerously putting passenger’s life into risk?
    Why cannot we stop over-loading school students in autorickshaw like sardines?
    Why cannot we have standard 13m Entry-Bay 15m Stop Area 9m Exit-Bay at every Bus Stop?
    Why cannot we have good Stop Signs of similar pattern and modern look at every stop?
    Why cannot we have world standard Bus Stops with self-maintainable hoarding spaces and with bright colour like yellow coloured mid-resting bar around or any other colour for quick identification?
    Why cannot we make our city beautiful and clean with constant changes in the years to come so that it will earn the reputation as one of the best town in India?

    All Mangaloreans be careful in supporting development of Mangalore city. Developing doesn’t mean high rise building what we should support is infrastructure and basic amenities to live. Same time we should not destroy our culture. Most people in Mangalore living in independent house that’s the culture we should maintain that so no high rise residential apartment should be allowed to build on city limits. All builders can go out skirts and start developing there this will stretch out city plus creates more infrastructures. Get experience from Netherlands I think it’s the only country in the world that has very strict rules on maintaining their culture.

    It's good news for mangalore. But do not forget presentation anybody can do, but in reality, practically implementing it is very difficult. The way officials handling infrastructure in Mlore is not upto to the mark. Hence please try to designate right people for the right job without corruption otherwise it will bring only shame from Media and Canada. Please learn from CWG inefficiency shown by officials. Do not lose this good opportunity and to show the world Mangalore is really a place of educated citizens. GOOD LUCK.

    It looks great news. When and how this will happen is the question??? and how many leaders will become millionaires??? MCC could't complete the road project in the time and all the projects are failed. Can MCC to every citizens the cost, the proposed project and time frame before implimenting or approving. It is our right to know because we are paying the tax.
