The couple who were rescued by the fire brigade personnel happened to be Sadashiva Rai, residing near Madavu, and his wife, Sunanda (48). Sunanda was drawing water from the well in the morning when she accidentally fell into the well. Her husband, who heard the noise of falling, peeped into the well and found his wife there. He immediately got into the well and helped his wife to stay safe, but he could not come out of the well. Therefore, both of them found a rock on which they safely stood.
The locals who came to know of the incident, conveyed information to the fire brigade. Fire station officer, Sundar V, led a team to the spot. The couple had become very tired by then. Rukmaya Gowda, Manjunath, Mohan, Chandrakumar and other members of the fire service team got down the well and carefully brought the couple outside. The efficient way in which the team functioned and the adventurous attitude of the personnel came in for lavish praise. The couple believes that they got a rebirth after falling into such a deep well.
After falling into the well, Sunanda had held on to the pump set pipe and cable to protect herself from drowning. Sadashiva Rai came down later with the help of a rope. Even though an effort was made to get them seated on a chair so that they could be pulled out with a rope, did not succeed. Fireman Rukmaya Gowda said they got a call at 5.05 am and immediately the team went to the house of Rai and conducted operation even though it was dark outside. They brought Sunanda out, followed by her husband. Sadashiva had held himself from, falling into the water and also supported his wife. He said both the husband and wife showed immense courage but were very much tired by the time they were brought out.
