Bantwal, Sep 4: In a tragic incident, a boy died after falling into a water-filled red stone quarry at Barekadu, under Bantwal town police station limits.
The deceased is identified as Sawad (12), son of Sadik. Locals said that the boy slipped and fell into the quarry when he was playing with other children. The quarry was reportedly filled with rain water.
The remaining children rushed home and informed their families soon after the boy fell. The locals rushed to the spot, rescued the boy up from the quarry and admitted him to a private hospital. The doctors however declared the boy dead on arrival. His post-mortem was conducted at Bantwal government hospital.
Bantwal town police station sub inspector Avinash visited the spot and registered a case in this connection. The illegal red stone quarry at Barekadu was left open without closing the pit. Rain water had filled in the over 20-feet deep quarry.
Locals alleged that failure to close the quarry has caused the tragedy. Complaints could be heard that several such stone quarries in the taluk are left open posing danger.
