Kundapur: Cradles Don’t Rock Here

Kundapur, Oct 7: Every mother earnestly desires to rock the cradle for her child. But as a contradictory to this, people in Choady village near Halady here are not supposed to rock the cradle as per their belief.
The villagers fear that the child might suffer from ‘Sarpabhade’ (Serpent Curse) if they rock cradle. Hence mothers in more than 85 houses residing in the village miss the relish in cradle rocking. Instead mothers, here lay down the cradles on the surface.
While chasing the truth behind this belief, it is ascertained that this custom is being followed since many years.
The belief is related to Nagarati temple in Chorady. It is believed that those who violate the tradition tend to spot snake (cobra). An incident which occurred during the Yakshagana extravaganza recently, a cobra was spotted when the devotees placed the idol of deity on the cradle.
There are temples such as Charurati, Nagarati, Bolabayi Naga, Theertha Vinayaka Temple in the village which draw a large number of devotees. The various cultural and religious activities and in particular the Yakshagana conducted in the village reflect the devotion of the people in the region.
However, the accurate reasons for the above said long standing belief related to Nagarati temple is not yet discovered.
