State Government Ignores Golden Girl Ashwini Akkunje

State Government Ignores Golden Girl Ashwini Akkunje

Siddapura (Udupi), Oct 18 (DHNS):
Ashwini Akkunje ran a memorable third leg in the women’s 4x400 metres relay to land India its first-ever gold medal in the women’s athletic events in the just-concluded Commonwealth Games, but the toast of Indian athletics has been ignored by her home state, Karnataka.

No MLA, minister of senior officer of the government have called Ashwini or her parents, Yashoda and Chidananda Shetty of Jansale, a little known village in Kundapur, near here.

Ashwini’s run electrified the 50,000-strong crowd at the Nehru Stadium as she took over the baton from second leg Sini Jose 10 metres behind the English and Nigerian runners, making up the deficit with a herculean effort and handing the baton to anchor Mandeep Kaur a metre ahead of the Nigerian third leg runner, ensuring that India got gold.

With Ashwini’s deer-like sprint, all Mandeep had to do was to maintain the lead. Among those impressed was Lord Sebastian Coe, the celebrated middle distance runner of the 80’s and the head of the London 2012 Olympics.

But for those who matter in Karnataka, all that meant nothing. Chidananda Shetty told Deccan Herald that apart from former minister K Jayaprakash Hegde who congratulated Ashwini over telephone, no other elected representative bothered to call her up.

He said Maharashtra, Haryana, Punjab and many  other state governments have announced cash awards varying from Rs 10 to Rs 50 lakh for their athletes who won medals in various events, but the Karnataka Government failed to even greet her. A very hard working girl, Ashwini had not visited her native place for over a year because of training.

Congragulations Ashwini on your unprecedented achievement for India.
If it was a Sachin tendulkar record which he normally scores competing with nine test nations it would have been media headlines and accolades would have swarmped him. Or for that matter when Anil Kumble or Robin Uthappa scored some stuff in IPL.
But it comes as no surprise to me when a team of four young talented girls have bought such a unprecedented laurel to the country in the third largest sports event in the world adorned by 70 odd countries it has gone unrecognised in the most sports discouraging country like India.

In India, the meaning of sports has been redefined as Cricket and no other sport be it Chess, Badminton, Hockey, Tennis where we have proved our place amongst the top, get no recognition and the encouragement they deseve.

Media, the politicians, the bureacracy and the citizens are all responsible for this chaos.

The sports awards and the national sports awards have lost thier significance as they are awarded to persons who set very low benchmarks.

We need to utilise the world class facilities left behind by the CWG village exclusively for the benefit of these sports (not cricket, lest it goes into the greedy hands of bureaucrats and politicians who have left a precedent by swallowing the likes of National Games village in Bangalore.

Hope and pray that Ashwini and her team gets the due recognition and a chance to try for a medal in Asiad and London Olympics.Cheers

Congrats Ashwini. Let us know the reality of Karnataka Govt. Ruling Party is very busy fighting with the Governer and the Central Govt to ensure their position to achieve their target (money making). Do you think they will have time to think of CWG Gold winners, who contributed from Karnataka. Citizens of Karnataka open your eyes. Never vote looking at the party. Remain in unity and elect a right candidate for our / states better future. Polititians are only making money for their pocket and spoiling our states/our name. We are to be blamed for it.

After electing if they are not upto the level , then we should get the thinks done. It is our right. But we ourself are letting them to make money by paying for everything as curruption. Let us banned them in that cases. Then they will never do it. Now adays matured people are not voting, why? Because they know it is waste. Anyway, no one will listen to us. The point of Ms.Ashwini not getting any Accolades from our state shows how busy our CM,Ministers and all the MLA`s from all the parties are busy making money for themselves and ignoring the athletes who made India proud and not like the MLA`s who fought in the assembly. This shows the lack of educated people in the assembly.
Congratulations to Ashwini and all the athletes who won medals and who participated in the Commonwealth Games and made India proud.

I watched the entire race intesely and was thrilled with the resutls. Indeed Ashwini did all the fast running in the third lap and put India into a strong winning position, although I must mention the final anchor runner Mandeep Kaur equally ran well. Congratulations Ashwini, you deserve all the recognition and the reward.
