Puttur: Betrayed youth in Malaysian prison, mother seeks help to rescue

Daijiworld Media Network - Puttur (SP)

Puttur, Oct 2: The mother of a young man from here who has been jailed in Malaysia for drug trafficking has pleaded with the police to rescue her son and bring him back to India. She has claimed that her son was a victim of betrayal.

Meenakshi, wife of Kantappa Poojary from Karinja House in Uruvalu village, Beltangady taluk, has filed this complaint at Uppinangady police station. She said that her son, Amit Karinja, had been hired by Pradeep Rai and Prakhyat Rai to carry electronic goods to Malaysia. "On March 2, 2013, they handed over a parcel of drugs, falsely making him believe that it contained electronic items. On reaching Malaysia, the police checked his belongings and arrested him. As per information, the court there has imposed a punishment in which his life is in peril," she stated.

The lady said that she and other members of her family had kept quiet as the accused told them that the responsibility of bringing back Amit Karinja safely rests with them and towards this, insisted that they should keep the entire thing a secret. Therefore, she said that her family remained quiet without registering any complaint. "Recently, after the court sentenced my son, they threatened us that if we reveal the details to anyone else, the family members as well as the youth will lose their lives. Thereafter, they switched off their mobile phones and went underground," she claimed.

The lady said that her son was in search of a job as he desired to work hard to help the family when his innocence was cashed by the above two accused who used his services for smuggling drugs. She demanded stringent punishment for these two.

Police, Malaysian Police should conduct a Lie Detector Test / Polygraph on this accused Amit Karinja to see if he really did know what he was carrying was drugs??? ....If he was not aware release him and pursue these MASTERMINDS Pradeep Rai and Prakhyat Rai ..... If he knew he was carrying Drug Consignment...then Malaysian Police prosecution is justified... Problem is in such circumstances nobody speak truth...everybody pretend innocent and persecuted... I have seen these type of guys doing this type of business in Mumbai....and using same Modus operandi.... ...Tak...Takk...

Sorry to hear this. There is very strict law in Far East countries, including Malaysia. Only family can present real fact to the Malaysian government, through Ministry of External Affairs to help the victim.

Reminds me of 1988 Australian film 'Dadah (drugs in Malay) is Death', based on true story of execution of Barlow and Chambers, the former with Auz and Brit dual nationalities, the latter with Auz. Mother of Barlow leaves no effort spared to get her son off the hook including an appeal for clemency from the then British PM Margaret Thatcher but to no avail..both the young men get the rope. Performance of Victor Banergee as Malaysian customs officer is noteworthy.

And how exactly did you reach this conclusion that Amit is innocent? Does every person engaged in illegal activity keep their family informed? For a court to impose harsh punishment, there has to be a criminal trial along with legal representation. Plus, as an Indian citizen is involved, consular assistance in Indian HC has to be made available.

I dont think this innocent person wil get much help for his release from local govt. If he had put up some blasphemous content on facebook, the whole govt machinery wud have done something about it, even if it meant turning the case by catching some innocents. But this drug case, wil not attract much sympathy from our govt
