Mangaluru: First time ever - Five girls to participate in Kambala

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangaluru (MS)

Mangaluru, Oct 3: Popular traditional Janapada sport Kambala of Tulunadu will be creating history this year by allowing girls to participate in the sport for the first time.

It is learnt that five girls have come forward to take part in the sport and the Kambala academy will decide on the type of buffaloes and also the rules for them.

Gunapala Kadamba, president of Kambala academy gave this information in the free training camp that is held by the Kambala academy at Moodbidri.

Already five families, who own the buffaloes that are run in the Kambala, have said that they will encourage the girls in their families to run the buffaloes in the sport. They will be trained by the academy and will be given a chance to compete in the Kambala of this year itself.

Gunapala Kadamba said that women are also as expert as men in looking after the buffaloes that are used in the sport of Kambala. As Kambala is a traditional sport, women will be provided opportunity as per the tradition.

“When I decided to introduce girls in Kambala, I received threats. When women are interested to take part, why we should not allow them? Parents of girls have also given their permission. They will be given training for five days. Later they will be given opportunity to take part in the competition with the buffaloes that are reared by their family itself,” said Gunapala.

Last year, a young girl named Chaithra Parameshwar Bhat of Kundapur had got down to the Kambala field and made history. She took part in the Miyar Kambala. This year five girls will be the star attraction.

In the midst of this, 33 young men, between the ages of 18 to 20 are selected for the 15 days training programme by the academy. They were selected from the group of 219 aspirants. Training is already started for all of them from September 19 itself. The training will end on October 10. This information was shared by Gunapal.

It's good to see girls are coming forward in every field. I am of the opinion that girls won't beat our dear sweet dumb animals as harsh and cruelly like others do!! But, anyways I don't support this game. I feel very sad looking at the buffaloes while running.... Poor animals...

What about horse racing which is a "gentlemen's" sport. Horses are similarly treated so they can run faster at the race. A lot of money is riding on that race. That said, I say BRAVO to the girls who have come forward to compete in the Kambala which in the days of yore I truly enjoyed.

In the name of traditional sport and an encouragement to 'Kambala' animals are subjected to some sort of beating with a stick or whipping poor animals cannot be justified. Why can't they introduce some modified vehicles to perform the race in an organized way ? Cock fight, dog fights banned and Kambala is encouraged .

I support this. If girls can run to get Olympic medals, why they can't in Kambala? If men can do it safely, why women can't? It is a sport and be sportive to welcome this move.

Wilson S .Canada ,just would like to explain something. You see in running race ,girls train first of all for days ,or months. years. These girls who take part in this kambala are not trained for more than a week I feel. These buffeloes to hold and control need a lot of strenght which girls I dont think have. Many times in kambala I have seen Buffeloes turn back or run out of norm. Then girls or men who control them fall .Very risky matter.Boys have more strenght to control them. Many beat them hard so that they should run fast is sad to see .Their skin gets red or even marks of beating to see is brakes heart. It was once forbidden why again take up this only because to attract tourists?Mostly buffels dont agree with women .why Idont know .Anyway I dont like to see this sport, animals suffering. They have to run, later they suffer and sweatwhich doesnt pass to their body.get heart attack too.@Shanker mangalore I agree with you total.
