Mangalore: Accomplished Scholar, Carnatic Vocalist, Srinath Marathe, No More

Mangalore, Oct 22: M Srinath Marathe (66), who had carved out a unique place in the field of Carnatic music, a musical maestro, and accomplished vocalist, breathed his last at his house in Padavingangady in the city due to ill health, on Thursday October 21.

Marathe, who had worked as a senior music artiste in Akashvani here for over three decades, is survived by wife, a daughter and a son.

Marathe had rendered musical concerts in various places including Bangalore, Chennai, several places in Kerala, Kanpur and other towns. Marathe, born in Mala in Karkala taluk in 1944, was trained in music by his father, a respected Vedic scholar and vocalist, Mahadev Marathe, and elder brother, Hindustani vocalist, Venkatesh Marathe. Kanchana Venkatasubrahmanya Aiyar became the Guru of this artiste par excellence, in later stages.

His concerts were known for pure tunes and impeccable rhythm. He was particular about pronouncing each word with clarity, and as per the traditional procedures backed by excellent prosody. He used to sing in Sanskrit, Kannada, Tamil, Marathi and a few other languages. He also used to impart musical training to selected students, and his devotional songs and hymns had a different style of his own, which set him apart from others.

Marathe had won several awards. S Pradip Kalkura, M Prabhakar Joshi, Nityanand Rao, A Eshwaraiah, Jayaram Shetty, and scores of music lovers have mourned the untimely death of the music maestro.
