Mangalore, Oct 22:
Several central parts of the city such as Ballalbaug, Pumpwell, Kodialgutthu, Bharatinagar, Kankanady, Falnir and Central Market, were flooded on Friday with upto two feet of water following heavy overnight rain.

Some areas of Udupi, Suratkal and Hosabettu are also under knee-deep water.

When Daijiworld team visited some of the affected areas, it was found that many shops and complexes in the Pumpwell area had been inundated creating throwing traffic into a mess.

Trees have been uprooted in Ekkur near NH 17, creating traffic problem. Many residents of the area blamed the National Highways Authority of India and the district administration for not ensuring that the storm-water drains were replaced properly while widening the road.

The unplanned layouts near Ujjodi, Pumpwell especially were badly affected without proper provisions of storm water drains. Though the residents had complained, the authorities concerned turned a deaf ear to problems, they alleged.

Further, many houses and shops in Barke, Alake, Rao and Rao circle, State Bank area and Dongarakeri among others have been waterlogged. Office-goers and school children are facing severe problems due to the untimely rains.

Many houses and shops in Barke, Alake, Rao and Rao circle, State Bank and Dongarakeri have been waterlogged.

A tree which has been uprooted near Vishal Hospital in Mannagudda has caused nuisance for the public. The incident occurred near the house of the police commissioner. An electric wire also snapped in the process and power supply has been interrupted. MESCOM personnel rushed to the spot to remove the uprooted tree after the incident. The fire department personnel rushed to the spot to cut off the branches of the tree to prevent any mishap. No causalities have been reported.

Do not just blame or support the government Mr nagesh and others, please go do something , at least i can say this because i gave a lift to a elderly lady who was waiting without for a bus and could not cross the road because of the water . small things like this will make the whole city/state better 1 day , there is really no point blaming , we will not only discourage the government from taking preventive measures , but also will fill them with the negativity . so make them all proud start it at home then take it to the city , then please comment here .

    Dear Mr Nagesh Nayak

Do u know anything other than the word ITALIAN.Don't keep on harping the same word, speak something new.By the way this government has been in power for more than 2 years now and more than doing good to people the most often thing they have done is in-fighting,taking the MP's to resorts and spending crores there. If the same money was spent to improve the drainage system of mangalore and other parts of dakshina kannada we wouldn't have seen these floods.

We don't have to blame any party or politician for what is happenning to Mangalore now. It is the Town Planning Commission who has to take the blame. Closing down the gutters and footpaths for widening the roads has blocked the flow of rain water and resulted in the flood. This will repeat every year and we Mangaloreans will have to live with it, just like the Mumbaikers do.

The innundation is the result of poor city planning. Do we have engineers/planners in the Corpn who can tell us what is the holding capacity of the city, the type and size of roads, drains, buildings, open spaces, gardens and play grounds needed by taking into account the geograpy, population and the environmrnt of the city ? They are all busy with feathering their own nests. Then what about the Disaster Management Group ? At least can we rectify some of the shortcomings in the city planning, at least now, after suffering the floods ? It should be a coollective effort of all citizens.

    My dear Indian brothers,
We all very expert in blaming one another. Why can't we understand that this is NATURAL CALAMITY. What ever the creator of universe proposes, non can dispose it. This is the result of our sins. We are expert in hating others. Killing each others. Instead of blaming others, why can't we love each other and please the creator who in term will showe his blessings on us. Instead we are making HIM to get more angery.

What a Pathetic Condition of M'lore?!!!!!If this was before the agreement with the Canadian City, i wonder whether they would still have extended their hands to Modern M'lore of this fate.Even God seems to have confused with the kind of Political Horse Trading going on forgetting the service to the needy, putting things in shambles by the elected Honourable servants of the Public-Our 'Neta's'.
Is it the warning of "pralaya"/end of the world in this sinful world????

Hi NN!! i dont know on what basis is ur comment related to the news that has been posted.Anyways firstly i would ask you what do you mean by development. If in your dictionary DEVELOPMENT means communal violence, goondaism, murder rape ,poaching of MLA s from other parties then you have to get your Bhartiya Jokers/Junglee Party...
If at all ur BJP party had ruled India for 60 years we would have been compared to Somalia,Pakistan Afghanistan are the other 3rd world countries. But because of your so called Italian led UPA and other bunch of intellects we are compared to Japan US China and Germany...
Please check the meaning of the word 'development' in Oxford dictionary and reply to my comment.

    c ferrer,Mangalore
Though Mangalore is a city of education and educated people,it has no relevance to living style or tolarance to health hazrads.Even though city roads are concretised and many areas are still under finishing stage and progress on slow phase resulting preventing free flow of rain water is a major cause for all these problems.MCC is also has not taken this aspect seriously.Only during flood havoc people cries all over.Another grave problem with Mangalore city is daily garbage picking system is of very low standard. In many areas there is no proper and continueous garbage picking system which is causing rain water blocking. There is is a urgent necessity for MCC to attend these type of happenings.

It is shocking to say the least. mangalore is supposed to be the city of education & educated people but they seem to be totally indifferent to what thier city is coming to thanks to the politicians.
Imagine the city stretch of the National Highway from Nantoor junction to Pumpwell as one massive lunar surface stretch. Nothing being done at all, nobody seems concerned- WHY is this.
Storm water drains, why even normal rain water drains are all choked. Yesterday evening the local shopkeepers were trying their utmost to clear drains so their shops would not get flooded- WHY.
Every family should be educated in the Right to Information Act so they can ask questions and demand answers on civic matters.

This what our Government is doing for citizens. Other funny thing is most people are buying land without thinking the reality and real development. In fact there is NO development in Mangalore as such. No proper drainage, No proper roads, No proper electricity and so on. But the land price in lakhs per cents. Taxes are so high middle class people can't survive. This is India and it is unfortunate we got independence and the politicians got the opportunity to cheat us. Hope Mangaloreans will wake up and protest the laziness of our government and officials.
