Mangaluru, Oct 5: Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) president D K Shivakumar will attend court hearing at Sullia on Tuesday, October 5 with regards to the phone conversation case.
Speaking to the media at the international airport in the city, Shivakumar said, “When I was the energy minister some miscreant had called me over the phone and abused me. Our officials had filed a complaint against him. He had even abused our officials. The court had asked me to give my witness in this case. In the beginning I did not know the seriousness. My knowledge in these matters is limited. Now I have honoured the order of the court and have come to attend. We are lawmakers. If we do not abide by it what is the point?”
It may be recalled, when D K Shivakumar was the Energy minister, a resident of Bellare had called him about the issue of electricity. A verbal duel ensued between the person and Shivakumar over the phone. Then this matter was referred to the court. Summons was served on D K Shivakumar several times to depose as witness in court. However, Shivakumar did not attend the hearing. So the Sullia court took out a warrant on him.
Speaking on Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi’s detention in Uttar Pradesh, he said, “Protesting is our right under the democracy form of government. Gandhiji taught us the lesson of protesting in non-violent manner. Farmers are protesting for the past 10 months. Neither the prime minister nor any ministers of the union government have met them or had discussion.
“Son of minister of union cabinet had killed four people by running car over them. People who got enraged due to this heinous act have involved in violence. This also should not have happened. However, no one is arrested in this connection. The concerned minister has not resigned. Is this a government?
“Uttar Pradesh police have arrested our leader Priyanka Gandhi, who had come to console the family of deceased farmers. Consoling people who have lost their kith and kin is a political duty. Male police officers have manhandled Priyanka Gandhi who went to perform her duty as a political leader. They have stolen her right. This is an insult to the whole Indian culture,” he said.
