Mangaluru, Oct 6: For the first time in Karnataka, a plan to impart professional training for the undertrial prisoners of Mangaluru prison with a view to help them to brighten their future has been envisaged.
The prisoners whose crimes have been proved in the court and sentences have been pronounced are already getting professional skill training. The plan to provide training to undertrials is new. The prison here does not have prisoners with very long sentence terms but there are a few who are here for the last about five years. For the women prisoners, in association with a NGO, tailoring training has been initiated.

The plan to impart skill training to undertrials in the prison was thought of with a view to provide them with an opportunity to achieve mental transformation and also to be able to pursue self employment or start their own business or bag employment in future. Preparations are on towards this goal by entering into an understanding between the police department and Karnataka German Technical Training Institute.
The move is to enter into agreement with government industrial training institutes, selecting a few courses from Pradhan Mantri Skill Development Department and making modifications to fit them into short time courses. Those who successfully complete the training will get certificates. This will help them to start their own business with loans from the government and other institutions.
The department of skill development, entrepreneurship and livelihood had organized a day's skill development training in the district prison here. The training got a good response. Out of 330 prisoners, 150 evinced interest. Because of lack of space, 25 were chosen and trained in refrigeration, wiring, air-conditioners, good communication, personality development etc, officials said.
Prison superintendent Chandan G Patel, said that women undertrial prisoners are already being given training in tailoring. He said that in the case of men, they will be asked to give in writing what kind of training they want to get.
