Mangalore, Oct 23: The two-day national level seminar-cum-workshop on the theme, ‘Autonomy: concept, issues and challenges’ was inaugurated at Eric Mathias Hall, St Aloysius College, here on Saturday Oct 23.

It was organized jointly by St Aloysius College and St Agnes College. Professor N R Shetty, president of ISTE and former vice-chancellor of Bangalore University was the resource person.

Speaking on the occasion, he said, since there is an enormous need to bring the qualities of the colleges at par with the global universities, the revised recommendations will be sent to the new higher education minister, thereby to comprehend the importance of granting the autonomous grade to the deserved colleges.

He also said that universities are finding it difficult to attend the varied needs of individual colleges and the colleges are in need of freedom to modernize their curricula and make them relevant. Each college with good qualities has its own interpretations towards excellence. St Aloysius and St Agnes Colleges are beyond all adverse comments; hence the colleges got the autonomous grade, he added.

Sr Olivia, former principal of St Agnes College, said that Tamilnadu state government had realized the continual internal assessment through autonomy at the earliest which has resulted in 14 autonomous colleges within the state during 1994.

Dr Bernard D’Sami, head of the department of History, Loyola College, Chennai conducted the session on the concept, issues and challenges of autonomous colleges.

The key note address was delivered by Padmashree Dr M Anandakrishnan, chairman, Science City, Chennai.
