Puttur, Oct 10: The additional district sessions court here has quashed the jail sentence awarded by Sullia court in the case pertaining to the alleged assault on Congress leaders Saraswati Kamath and other Congress activists by BJP workers including Mandala president Harish Kanjipili during the 2013 assembly elections.
A case was registered at Sullia police station alleging that a group of BJP activists led by Harish Kanjipili attacked Congress zilla panchayat candidate Saraswati and two other Congress workers on May 4, 2013 at Markanja village of Sullia taluk.

The inquiry of the case took place in the court of senior civil judge of Sullia and the court had given two years' prison sentence and imposed fine on accused Harish Kanjipili, Eshwarappa Gowda Harladka, Ravichandra Kodapala, Savin Kodapala, Divakara Nayak Ermetti, Dinesh Chemnur, Ramachandra Haldadka, Shanmukha Sootegadde, Dhananjaya Baikadi, Balakrishna Kanjipili, Manohara, Deepak Elimale, Manoj M K, and Vishwanatha C L alias Vikas. Sullia court had given a month’s time for the accused for appeal to higher court and also granted bail.
The accused approached Puttur additional district sessions court, which quashed the jail sentence given by Sullia but upheld the fine, and asked the Sullia court to hand over the files of the case to Puttur sessions court.
The court said that the accused who are awarded sentence should pay the fine in the form of deposit within 15 days and each should pay a personal bond of Rs 50,000 with surety of one person. Judge of Puttur district court said that the inquiry of the same will be conducted from November 8 based on the files and records of Sullia court.
