UPCL Electricity Project Connecting Nandikur-Hassan Under Way

Udupi, Oct 26: The work on connecting the high tension cables to supply electricity from Nandikur to Hassan is underway. The high tension cables are being mounted on 46-feet-high towers from the project site of Udupi Power Corporation Limited (UPCL) at Nandikoor.
 
Karnataka Power Transmission Corporation Limited (KPTCL) has awarded the contract to the Bangalore-based Deepak Cables.

UPCL has already acquired private property for erecting towers and has already disbursed suitable compensation to the respective land owners. However, a few private land owners are opposing construction of towers on their lands, which has posed a hindrance to the ongoing works, sources informed.
 
The high tension cables will pass through a majority of private properties from the project site up to Karkala, while it will be forest area till Hassan. The work is likely to meet setbacks as the forest department has not yet issued clearance to undertake works on towers in the forest area with regard to environmental issues.
 
KPTCL is hopeful of getting the environmental clearance from the union forest department. The work on erecting towers and laying high tension cables have been smoothly undertaken from the UPCL project site of Nandikur, Adve, Santoorkopla, Inna route up to Karkala.
 
The work on connecting the cables is in full swing.
 

The expertise of Bengali workforce
 
Skilled workers from West Bengal have been hired for the task of erecting the towers and connecting high tension cables. These experts work on the 46-feet-high towers without any sign of fear. They are engaged in connecting the cables fastened with safety belts, and are rewarded with sufficient wages.
 
In all, 400 Bengali workers are engaged in the project, informed sources from Deepak Cables.

    Dear Mr Shetty,

    Lets realise that,transporting coal from Chennai or other parts to Hassan side also costs additional expenditure, besides burning a lot of fuels like diesel etc which is again envoirnmental hazard and time consuming too.
    It is again suprising to see the declaration of this area Highly poluted, when areas covered by paper mills, cement and steel factories are left out.
    Will there be any reason behind this ?

    George pais is correct. everybody wants power, petrol and all amenities near their homes . but no one wants pollution!. Pollution comes along with all developments. Its a tough choice and that is the price to pay. If you are that concerned with pollution etc you must lead a frugal life in a village.our country will pollute as our population will grow and that is what is happening

    The question also arises why we are blaming govt of day when we opposes the implementation of the project.But yes we have to take in to account of the "PARISARA NAASHA"
    in areal sense.

    The projects passes thru our home & in to the sea,now Our area fisherman cannt go to sea due to nonavailbilty of fish. this people have fooled us in the name of devlopment.

    Mr. Pais, Raichur and Bellary are open environment whereas our area is barricaded by the Ghats in its semi-circle formation which restricts dispersion of pollution and the low wind speed further increases the ground level concentration. On the other hand the porous lateretic soil bed affecting health, crops losses and contamination of the underground aquifers.You see the consequence already - Central Board d Mangalore as critically polluted area. The leeward side of the Ghats can receive coal from already developed coal harbors in Chennai, Ennore & Tuticorin from where the railway is readily available - that is if only coal based plant is required. You must understand that the nature has its own endowments. Just like coconut cannot grow in Kashmir apple cannot be our crop. Hence the development must be on the principles of sustainability.

    The above plant is producing Electricity for the last 2 -3 months and learnt that the power is being supplied to Mangalore.And this is the reason, Mangalore saw a fewer loadsheddings in peak time of May-June.
    The Entire plants genration is may not required by Mangalore alone and if they transmit extra power to other areas is justified in interest of Plant running into full capicity.
    As a mentioned by one writer, There may be land in Kuamarnnas home district ( Hassan), But they donot have Sea port to bring coal from all over and its not feasible to transport coal from Managalore to Hassan.
    We should also remember for the last 40 years, Mangalore uses power produced at Raichur,Bellary and Shimoga ( Linganmakki)and now when the opportunity comes here to produce, we cannot say that we are only getting polutuion out of Udupi Plant.
    If cement produced at Bhadravathi and Wadi used in Mangalore for our house contructions, we should also be prepared for other way too and cannot be selfish.
    Its just like when Mangalorens go to Bomaby and Gulf counrties is always justified, But people from Bhihar and Bangla comming here for work is not accpetable - Which direction our thinking GOES ?

    In the near future in India only dance bars will bear names like "Forest" "Kadu" & "Aranya" etc. Nothing in the nature will remain if we go decieving the earth in this manner. They razed 390 acres forest in Yellur, hundreds in other villages and there will be nearly 1500 acres of evergreen rain forest of western ghats R/F and others to go. And this is happening when the Govt of India and other authorities are spending huge sum to get the World Heritage status to the unique environmental monument i.e. Western Ghats that provides water security to the entire southern peninsula. Our forefathers said we borrowed this environment from our grand children so must worship it and leave it safe for them. But have no doubt, we will be called 'the cowards of a criminal generation' for compromising their natural asset for our temporary gains and that too when we had options.

    Workers have no safety shoes, safety gloves, Hard Hats, Safety glasses. Wonder if the transmission lines are grounded. Rule of thumb, all lines are considered live unless grounded. No high tension lines are tightened by hands, they need to use a torque wrench, which I don't see the workers using. Pity the workers and an accident waiting to happen. Company must provide all safety equipment if it values human life and if it wants to become a world class company.

    Our south canara will only get ash from this project.....and our fertile fields are already gone . Its waste of time asking why didnt they construct this plant in our Kumaranna's Hassan district where there is a lot of vacant land.

    Does that make sense to anyone?? Padubidre and the surrounding areas are being polluted..Ecology of the western ghats are being compromised all for people of Hassan. May be the only reason why Padubidre was choosen was that it will be very easy for nagarjuna to dump all waste into the Arabian sea without any hassels.Also Transmission losses will be huge from Padubidre to Hassan.Instead it would be better if the same power would be used for the coastal cities of Mangalore and Udupi.
