Mangalore, Oct 27: All city, service and inter-state buses are off roads on Wednesday Oct 27 seeking immediate repair of NH 17 from Mulki to Tokkottu.

Addressing the protesters, Congress leader and president of Dakshina Kannada Zilla Karmika Parishat Bus Naukarara Sangha Ivan D'Souza said that they had sought support from bus owners for the bandh and it evoked a good response with people gathering in massive numbers.

Rajavarma Ballal, president, Canara Bus Owners’ Association said that already 10 lives were succumbed to death within the short span of time. But the authorities concerned did not bother to take any action. Water, house, and roads are the basic needs of the citizens, but due to silence of the people they have been betrayed by the ruling government, he said. He called upon the people not to pay the road taxes unless the repair works are carried out. He alos said that the contractors involved in the road works should be held responsible for the unmotorable condition of the roads.

Later, the members of Canara Bus Owners' Association and District Congress Committee under the leadership of Ivan D’Souza took out a padayatra from Nantoor to Talapady, stretch of NH17 that is in highly pathetic condition. U T Khader, Mangalore MLA and Congress leader Moideen Bava among others were present.

We have a serious problem with the construction of the roads and there is a necessity to find out the technical reasons for the damage of these roads within a short time. I have driven myself from Mumbai to Mangalore by road and the road from Mumbai up to Hubli is in very good condition but bad roads starts particularly in Karavali districts.

I have some credible information that contractors are not ready even to take up the repair work because elected representatives of DK and Udipi are demanding for the commission up to 60% of the total cost.

Hence blaming of any government will not help the cause unless the elected representatives take a lead to utilize the total money received from the government in the construction and repair of the roads. There is also a requirement of independent third party inspection Agency to check the material used for the construction and the process of construction.

Heavy rains, Poor quality of work has resulted in bad conditions of the roads. Why blame the center or the state. The officials of the roads department & the contractors who are to be blamed. Do any of the of the officials of the Roads dept take any interest. Before passing the bills they have to see whether the road has been as per the specifications set. What happens here is the contractors pay to the corrupt officials and get the bills passed. Instead of the protest drag out the road officials from their offices and bury them on the road. Then everything will be OK.

When the commuters were silently suffering none of the local departments or the elected representatives bothered to organise some temporary relief of filling those very badly damaged road craters and potholes. It was shame on them for not utilizing any one of those Central and State Govt relief fund to fill those craters with laterite stone wastes in the last three months. Youngsters fold your sleeves and do some innovative Gandhi-giri in all the roads leading to Mangalore so that the department will wake up from their sleep. I request our MP and MLAs not to let us down in the time of emergency like this. Jai Hind!

It was during Sri Atal Bihari Vajpayee's govt where there were no patholes on the roads. Also remember that SM Krishna has done nothing for mangalore. This protest has become an eye opener eventhough people are lacking information about construction and repair of the roads. These politicians are fooling the people. I suggest,on every road project, there should be a strong board nailed at safe place (at bus stop)mentioning 1)Date of project begining. 2) Name of the Contractor?sub-contractor 3) Amount alloted for the project.4)Name of the quality contolling body. These boards should last for atleast 10 to 15 yrs. Also there should be a web-site giving all the information about roads/bridge constuction and repair. I hope this will bring some fear among the contractors and GOVERNMENT AUTHORITIES.

It is rediculous to see the status of NH 17. I strongly believe todays status of NH 17 is deliberate by Congress Leaders to teach our region people who are voting for BJP. Let them go and see NH roads in other states. This is also because of we people. We do not want to heart anyone because, everyone likes to keep their image. Whole Mangalore / udupi area people should block highways and should not allow any outside trafic to go through this effected area. At least ones we should go aggressive in our region, keeping everything aside and show that we are not soft people. Then only our leaders will wake up. There should be mass boycott to any political gathering and elections.

Dear Readers: All of you should know these facts The National Highway NH 17 passing from Shiroor to Mangalore (Talapady) and NH 13 from Mangalore(Kulshekar-Kaikamba) to Solphur and NH 48 Mangalore-Bangalore road, all belong to the Central Government. However the maintenance of the highways is the duty of the respective State Governments which pass through their area. The NH 17, Shiroor-Mangalore road hitherto has been handed over to National Highway Authorities of India(NHAI) only 2 months ago. It was the duty of Karnataka Government to maintain this road all these time before handing over to NHAI. See the conditions of the NH 13 and NH 48, including Shiradi Ghat, and which has got damaged due to overloaded Iron Ore Trucks, each carry on average of 35 to 40 tones of iron load, thus overloading it, when their actual capacity is only 15 tones. The Karnataka State Govt. failed to maintain these NH 13 and NH 48 highways and all of you can see the conditions.Stop blame game.

I think we pay the road tax in full at one go while buying vehicle.Atleast it is so for a private vehicles.I am not sure whether it is the same for public transport vehicles.
Yes,national high ways are to be maintained by the Central Govt.
I suggest our general public to show their anger and protest against the right authorities rather than mixing up the issues.
If the roads inside the cities are bad then we have all the right to protest against the local city administration.( DC office & Corpn.etc..) May be we get some results if protested against the local MLA or MP.
In my opinion, governance from all parties are same as same guys change loyalty just like we change our shirts. No use in pointing fingers at each other.
After all we Mangaloreans have to be blamed for this problem as we elected these guys.

Dr Kiran Acharya, Manipal, I suppose you should first get your facts right. It is the responsibility of the State Govt to repair & Maintain NH & claim the expenditure from the Centre. The Centre reimburses the expenses claimed by the State. There is a formula & procedure for claiming such expenses. The Centre does not undertake repairs or maintenance on its own, unless the State pleads helplessness as in the case of the Charmady Ghat section, wben the repeated repair works by the State was unsatisfactory. Of course, even in the case of Charmady, the repairs/maintainance by state PWD conducted under NHAI supervision was not upto the mark & people are suffering.

Ultimately, the authorities listen & pay attention only if there are serious protests from the public.

    1. You might have seen the authority taring all the roads every year after rain . There are engineers from the department to supervise the work. QUESTION THEM NOW AND ASK FOR THE REASON FOR GETTING THE ROADS SPOILT WITHIN 6 MONTHS AFTER THE REPAIRS. PROTEST IN FRONT OF THEIR HOUSES AND OFFICES.

    2. FIND OUT THE MEASURES TAKEN TO DRAIN THE WATER ON THE MAJOR ROADS WHERE TRAFIC FLOW IS AT ITS PEAK.

3 FIND OUT WHERE THE DETENTION MONEY WENT ? FIND OUT THE PREVIOUS JOB COMPLETION REPORT AND ALSO FING OUT THE ENGINEERS DETAIL WHO GAVE THE SATISFACTORY CERTIFICATE.
