The task of removing trees standing alongside the stretch of the national highway 17 between Suratkal and Kundapur is underway.  A number of trees, which lived here for hundreds of years, are being chopped off, to make room for the long-awaited conversion of the highway stretch into a four-lane one.
 
The 72.5 kms-stretch of the national highway 17 between Kundapur and Suratkal is being converted into a four lane road. Contracts have already been allotted to nine tree cutting companies for bringing down trees standing by the roadside. Several of these companies are based in Kerala, and the tree-cutting work is being carried out presently at considerable speed.



















 
The above stretch has been split into nine different divisions namely Surathkal-Mulki, Mulki-Yermal, Yermal-Katpady, Pangala-Santekatte, Santekatte-Koteshwara and a few more.
 
Tree cutting contract work has been auctioned on the basis of the standard rate prescribed by the government. More than 30,000 precious trees exist on the stretch.
 
According to forest department sources, there are 16000 trees along the highway between Kundapur and Suratkal, and that these have been auctioned for Rs 181.27 lac. The auction proceeds will be equally shared by the forest department and the state government. The National Highway Authority of India is required to deposit a sum of Rs 68.15 lac with the government towards cost of growing trees again by the roadside, and also as the state is compelled to sell the trees it had grown over the years. The Authority also is required to plant saplings, which should be not less than double the number of trees now being uprooted, and hand it over to the forest department, revealed assistant conservator of forests, Manjunath Shetty.

The highway department, which got rights over the trees from the forest department, in turn, auctioned it to private bidders. It is learnt that a couple of the contractors, who have bagged the contract for cutting the trees, have resold the rights to others at a profit.
 
The forest department has been closely monitoring the tree cutting operation presently under way, as it is vested with the responsibility of ensuring that only those trees belonging to the government that have been auctioned, are being cut down, and not others. The local policemen have also been given the responsibility of security to ensure that environmentalists do not create hurdles for this operation.
 
Voices of land acquisition-affected go unheard:

As per the original plan, 60 metres of land was proposed to be acquired on both sides of the road for highway widening purpose. Later, after discussions, it was informed that only 45 metres of land would be acquired, in tune with the concessions extended in Kerala and Goa by the highways department. However, the survey department is presently conducting its survey for a stretch of 60 metres. The affected people have now become a harassed lot, as the long-awaited clarification for their doubts from the national highway department has remained elusive.

    Its really Sad to seee these pictures.Request the Authorities to plant 2 trees for one cut down.For every stretch of one Km give the responsibility to Panchayat or the any youth organization to look after and nurture the trees well till they grow or else NH 17 will be a deserted place with no greenery around.

    As a nature lover, Mr. Hemanth, Mangalore has also made some sensible observations and your comment that what he has done to the society is uncalled for. Now people may ask you same question and do you have any answer? You have been only spreading venom in this platform and do you feel that it can help the mankind or society any way? Please restrain when you comment on others views.

    Now I may recall your comment when some religious places were to be relocated to make way for the road and you had totally divergent views. At that time, did you not thought of the development?

    Mangalore has been undergoing lots of changes over the past 10 years and every effort has been made to improve the infrastructure like road widening,augmented water supply,extension of UGD ,Solid waste management. I have lived in Mangalore from 1960's and there used to be a time when we used to get two hours water supply a day but now the same area gets almost 24 hrs water supply and that too 22 Kms North of city.City has developed a lot from 1960's but there is no scientific data to prove that monsoons have become weaker.

    Sadly in India and in Mangalore there has always been a shortage of water due to bad distribution and faulty planning despite having a good monsoon.
    Developed countries have everything ,good roads ,uninterrupted power,safe drinking water from the tap.They had all these developments in the 1960's and we are having it now.Hopefully in 40 years time I hope India will have these basic facilities and reduced deaths from accidents on our highways.

    Good comments by Hemanth, but the growing industry need better infrastructure, otherwise the development will slow down, but the forest authorities should make sure to plant new saplings to replace the cut trees, and yes people should not destroy forests and make wild animals homeless. Its sad news when animals come to search food in the villages and get killed or caged by people.

    Hey people, if you have planned to go for a 4 lane road by chopping the good old trees, do it. Of course we are sad to see those big trees getting chopped, but we are happy that they are being cut for a good cause. We are happy for it. But please see that we dont get to see the same sick potholed roads yet again!!! If it is so, then please let the tress grow... And also note that we pay tax for pot holed roads!!!!

    God save our World. In the name of development we are committing large scale attrocities against mother nature. Cutting a tree will take minute, just imagine the time it has taken to grow and the benefits it provided to us. Hope government will wake up and do the needful to fulfill this ecological imbalance. I storngly agree with Mr.Hemanth and his views. One day will come, our childrens will start cursing these developements, when there is no rain, drinking water and clean air to breath. Just look at our children's before writing big big things on developments.They are the one going to get the punishments of today's developments. We can't help it.Very selfish world. Developed countries have started to save this earth. But we have started to dig our own graves.Everyone is thinking about today. Tommarrow who cares about. Let god take his own judgement.

    Mr Nagesh you mentioned Patro for MRPL case y didnt u mention Mulki who came and sat on the streets in hundreds when government wanted to get rid of the Katte for road widening.. ur your vegetable eating skinny Pandits came and sat on the street alond with the BJP chelas and were protesting.. and on tat article u had put a comment saying Congress knows only to Destoy nature and ur 10 point agenda where did all tat disappear now..

    After waiting for so many yrs, there going to be 4 lanes from Kundapur to Surathkal. Cutting Trees for Roads & Schools is accepted but not for Industry or residential buildings. I feel Pity for those who are going to lose their shops n houses. Few people have built new houses very close to the Highways, they won’t get even compensation.

    Chopping of tress are inevitable for the developments,to have a better road facility for increasing traffic roads must be widened.We are in modern era,where so many industries & SEZ's are coming up,one cannot live with narrow roads.Highways must be widened for the present traffic.Same time government must see that the number of trees lost be compensated by planting double the amount of trees lost,so that atleast half of them survives if looked after well.Also periodical planting of tress will see the old trees are occupied by the new & preserving the nature is not a problem at all.Make the up coming industries pay for the growing of nature as part of developments,do not allow politicians involve in these,let these be entrusted to the local leading industries by allowing them use this area for their add's by installing hoardings etc.They will gain by the Publicity & people by the preserved nature.

    I knew that they would be some opposition to this . Although I respect your concern for greenery I must stress that India has no option but to develop its infrastructure like good roads ,power and safe drinking water. One has to strike a balance between development and infrastructure. In our country thousands of people die every day on these type of roads due to various factors. Do not we have respect for human life? Do we not have a responsibility towards the society to prevents those deaths. When I came to UK for the first time I was surprised at the excellent road network and I wanted my dear Kudla have have similar roads and that is happening. Mangalore city has seen a sea change but more needs to be done.We want good highwys that is prevalent in Maharasthra,Punjab or Gujarat . We do not want to go the Kerala way where they are demading 30 metres highways which is absolute nonsense.A good highway should have broad lanes ,good median and hard shoulder plus service roads and for this we need space. Of course the authorities should plant new trees whenever one is felled and I think they are doing that.I think this is the way to go forward.Remember India is on the fast lane.

    Chopping of the tree is inevitable for widening the road.
    all are blaming respective govt. for narrow roads.

    hemant tell us how you can widen the road without chopping the trees. a single person is not willing to give his land/property for the development. e.g. patrao / mrpl incident.

    In bangalore thousands of trees aged more than 200 years old chopped of for raod widening, flyover, under pass etccc.

    why you are cribbing that olden days are good & now we are destroying the nature.

    go round mangalore & see the difference between now & 20 years ago.

    mangalore has become concrete jungle with multistory residential as well as commercial buildings.

    why you have not stopped construction of buildings on lush green paddy fields & on coconut gardens.

    fyi, development means nothing but partial destruction of nature .

    if you want benefit , you have to loose something.

    its good to no that roads are getting widened. at the same time 16000 trees are being cut down.
    that is a big loss to the nature.
    forest dept will be 90 laks richer.
    they have promised to plant trees after the road wideneing lets see how true this statement is.

    What a disaster, Govt had cut down 16000 trees. I dont think that they will plant 32000 saplings!!!!!!!! Have we people not seen Bhantwal to Surathkal road widening project, its not completed and there are no saplings planted.... Flowering plants do not provide the shade that a full grown tree provides...
    Let make a move so that Govt or the Forest Dept. will make sure that they plant atleast 16000 trees and see to it they are taken care off till they grow on their own... What Say????????

    This is the saddest news but inevitable given that our country has taken the route of so-called "growth" and "development". The beautiful and pristine green forests of beloved S. Kanara will soon be gone and replaced by a concrete jungle... We will all be "developed" but at a cost that is too much to bear for our spirits... I dare say that in days past we were no so "developed" but much happier.

    to gain some we have to lose some. don't we appreciate good wide roads when we travel to other states? of course necessary corrective steps needs to be taken to set right the wrong done.with hundreds of vehicles being registered every week, where are they supposed to ply? pity some do not understand this and want to have the pie as well as the mush.

    Its very sad to see people not commenting on this article. Hope that people like more mirch masala to comment. This is the fate of the world. Once these trees were sown to provide shelter to the pedestarians, now we have A/c cars and we no more require trees. Going in to development and modernization, I think we are really losing (destroying) the real charm of this world by reducing greenery. By this we show our ancestors that you were fools and we are more better than you. We human being even if we have thinking power still we do not think for the least (may be not the least). We destroy forest and we force the wild animals to get into town/city. Then we dump them into sofisticated zoo's for our entertainment. I feel the we make those animals as beggars. From day till night they have to wait for the time to get their food, is'nt it. But hopefully if they were in forest they could have easily earned their food in thier own way and lived happily. We the young generation do not like to cultivate lands but interested in selling and earning easy money by converting them into townships. This is really a sad story of our world around. I really miss my child hood by seeing all this. They were trees to give us shelter and good health and now we have polution and modernized society jut opposite to the above statement. This is our world were we live and our children have to live. What good we do now will lead and give a good day ahead to our children. Nothing more to pendown.
