Zamora, Jul 3: In a devastating turn of events, Liverpool forward and Portugal international Diogo Jota has died at the age of 28 following a car accident in Zamora, Spain. His brother, André Silva, also a professional footballer with Portuguese second-tier club Penafiel, lost his life in the same crash, the Portuguese Football Federation (PFF) confirmed on Thursday.
The tragic incident occurred around 12:30 AM local time when the brothers’ Lamborghini veered off the road while overtaking another vehicle. According to Spain’s Guardia Civil, a tyre blowout caused the car to lose control and ignite after impact. Both men died on the scene.

The PFF issued a heartfelt statement expressing deep sorrow over the sudden loss of two prominent figures in Portuguese football. “Much more than an outstanding player, Diogo Jota was an extraordinary person, respected by all colleagues and opponents. His joy was contagious, and he was a symbol in his community,” the statement read. The federation also announced it had requested UEFA to observe a minute’s silence during Thursday’s Women’s European Championship match between Portugal and Spain, honouring the memory of the two players.
Jota’s death has sent shockwaves through the global football community. Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher was among the first to react, calling the news “devastating” and sending his condolences to Jota’s wife, Rute, and their three young children. The couple had celebrated their wedding just weeks ago, on June 22, with Jota sharing moments from the ceremony on social media.
Jota joined Liverpool in 2020 and became a key figure in Jurgen Klopp’s squad, helping the club win the Premier League, FA Cup, and two League Cups. He made 182 appearances for the Reds and scored 65 goals. Internationally, he earned 49 caps for Portugal, scoring 14 times and playing a crucial role in their UEFA Nations League victories in 2019 and 2025, including their recent final win over Spain.
The passing of Diogo Jota and André Silva marks a dark day for football. As tributes pour in from around the world, the legacy of both brothers—as athletes, as family men, and as admired public figures—will continue to be remembered.
