Fuel to get cheaper: Govt reduces excise duty on petrol, diesel by Rs 5, Rs 10 respectively

New Delhi, Nov 3 (IANS): The Centre on Wednesday sweetened Diwali celebrations by announcing that it will slash excise duty rate on both petrol and diesel fuels, thus bringing down retail rates.

The excise duty will be reduced by Rs 5 for petrol and Rs 10 for diesel from November 4.

Domestic prices of both fuels have touched record highs on the back of a steep rise in crude oil cost.

Petrol has already breached the Rs 100 per litre mark and above in several cities, whereas, diesel is not far behind.

The rise in transport fuels had raised concerns over a build-up of inflationary pressure which has even concerned the RBI.

The Finance Ministry, in a statement on Wednesday night, a day before Diwali, said: "The reduction in excise duty on diesel will be double that of petrol. The Indian farmers have, through their hard work, kept the economic growth momentum going even during the lockdown phase and the massive reduction in excise on diesel will come as a boost to the farmers during the upcoming Rabi season."

"In recent months, crude oil prices have witnessed a global upsurge. Consequently, domestic prices of petrol and diesel had increased in recent weeks exerting inflationary pressure. The world has also seen shortages and increased prices of all forms of energy."

As per the statement, the Centre has made efforts to ensure that there is no energy shortage in the country and that commodities such as petrol and diesel are available adequately to meet requirements.

"Driven by the enterprising ability of India's aspirational population, the Indian economy has witnessed a remarkable turnaround post the Covid-19 induced slowdown. All sectors of the economy - be it manufacturing, services or agriculture - are experiencing significant upward economic activity.

"To give a further fillip to the economy, the Government of India has decided to significantly reduce the excise duty on diesel and petrol."

In addition, the Centre urged state governments to commensurately reduce VAT on petrol and diesel.

Very true, as long as EMS don't play spoilsport, elections are the most powerful tools that are capable of driving some sense through the thick skulls of our thick shinned law makers who get fuel free of cost anyway.

The people must think which government protect their interest.they should not passionate to politicians or political parties. They are power hungry at the cost of people. If we make them powerless they will think of common people. The reduction of duty is not for subsidising living costs of people but to subsidise power losing fear. All politicians one and same

I agree wholeheartedly with Langools Sir, that it was due to the efforts of persistent magnet, Jossa and his 8 pm Patlam, that the Central Government reduced excise duty by 5 rs. Following this,a petrified Bommai already in the know about Jossas exploits in Daiji, has slashed taxes by Rs 7. Rs 12 in total !!! Not even by election results but Josaas kirikiri has done the trick ! Our FM too runs miles now on hearing Josaasnname it seems. Jai Josaa.... Walter Sir may even think of a serial titled...... ' ಜೊಸನ್ನ ಕಿರಿಕಿರಿ '....With me, Langools there dialogue, screenplay dhould be no problem. Additional punches... Flavi n Cynthi will provide. Now with PK gunning RaGa, all eyes on Josaa to be the party strategist or secretary ! Who PK u ask?? Prashanth Kishore man !!

First raised it beyond reach of many and reduce the same by a few rupees and they hope people will rejoice. Just like festival time discounts after raising the MRP and sticking a reduced label. Stockholm Syndrome is attempted by the government. 47 costing fuel still is marketed above 100. Time for people to press the govt United to sto this fuel tax loot.

i think this is the result of the jhatka public gave in the form of the loss in elections. Like this only if public gives more jhatka, then petrol will come to its original price. However, it is too much to ask from the highly educated voters of mangalore to vote sensibly.

Modi & Co. now know that people can teach them a good lesson if they increase the price of petrol and diesel. But still plus ₹100 the cost of petrol. The Government is not doing a great job just taking the citizens for a ride.

The reduction should have been made in percentage as all calculation is based on percentage other than base price or base price should be reduced by 5 or rs5 to have meaning ful word that ordinary people are benefitted. Even rich are benefitted that also go to the poor directly or indirectly
