Dubai, Nov 9: Daiji Dubai, the forum of Konkani writers in Dubai had the opportunity of meeting noted Konkani writer Catherine Rodrigues as she was felicitated during a literary session at Shezan Restaurant recently.

In her address to the gathering, Catherine Rodrigues gave an account of her journey as a writer. Catherine, one among eight brothers and four sisters, was born to late John and late Magdeline from Katpady. Masters in sociology, she runs Preeti tutorials in Katapady. Multi-talented Catherine’s literary work is beyond Konkani as she has also written 43 Tulu stage plays and five Kannada-Tulu stage plays.

She has written 20 Konkani dramas and 83 programmes have been aired on All India Radio Mangalore, which include short stories, poems, interviews etc. In Konkani literature she would be always known for her valuable contribution to genres of novels and short stories based on the social theme. Most of her work represents the lifestyle and traditions of coastal Karnataka.

The members actively participated in lively discussions where Catherine gave her inputs for the queries. Dayan D’Souza, the founder member of Daiji Dubai presided over the session. In his speech, Dayan highlighted her simplicity as a human being and her depth of knowledge as a writer. Nanu Marol compered the programme with witty annotations and Robert Fernandes concluded with a touching vote of thanks.

Hearty congratulations to Catherine, a versatile author in Tulu, Konkani & Kannada. It's a long due attention of Konkani community to her contributions to literary world. Knowing Catherine for over 2 decades I sincerely feel that the Tulu community had embraced her with open arms long before we recognized her merit and the loss of Konkani was the gain for Tulu language, and the proof is her published works in Tulu and sorry to say that she has not a single published Konkani book to her credit except in magazines & periodicals. Well done daijis.
