Udupi, Nov 17: With the announcement of MLC elections for the 25 seats, all the political parties have begun their search and are busy finalising the candidates. In a surprising yet game changing move, the Indian National Congress is planning to field one of its ground-level party worker as candidate for the Dakshina Kannada (DK)-Udupi constituency.
During the announcement of the elections, there were nearly 11 aspirants for the DK-Udupi seat from the Congress. The aspirants included few big names from the party. But as per confidential sources, the state leaders have now decided to field one of their most honest and ground level party workers for the DK-Udupi MLC seat.
Few round of discussions have taken place already regarding the finalisation of the candidate. Sources say that all the other aspirants have agreed to refrain from contesting if the state leaders confirm the seat to a particular party worker.
The expected candidate happens to be from Brahmavar taluk and has been working for the party over three decades faithfully. Bhujanga Shetty has already begun his campaign work. A video of him requesting support from the voters has been making sounds on the social media accounts of the party.
With this decision to field a ground-level worker, the Congress is hoping to counter one of the major political policies of the BJP which is giving election tickets to ground level party workers. If this decision of the Congress proves to be successful, the party’s image will get a massive facelift where one can say that instead of the high command making decisions, the party members will do the same. Current state Congress president D K Shivakumar has also been commenting about the decentralisation of power in the party from bottom to top and not top to bottom. This was said by him in many of the public gatherings.
According to reliable sources of the party, Bhujanga Shetty’s name has been finalized for the MLC seat, which will be made official within a few days.
