Udupi: Thieves steal cash, ornaments worth Rs 3.7 lac as family slept next door

Udupi, Nov 18: In a complaint filed in the town police station here, Babu Acharya living behind Jumadikatte temple, Gundibail here, reported that thieves entered his house between 9.15 pm on November 16 and 5.30 am on November 17 by breaking open the lock of his house, and stole gold and silver ornaments apart from cash found in the donation box placed in the enclosure meant used as puja room, and also the original documents relating to landed property of his elder brother, from the almirah. The locker was opened by the thieves with the help of a key found in the almirah, he said.

The family has built a new house behind their old house. During the day they cook and stay in the old house and sleep in the newly built house at night from August 24 onward this year. When the theft happened in their old house, the family members were asleep in the new house. The total estimated value of items stolen has been mentioned as Rs 3.7 lac.

A case under sections 457 and 380 of Indian Penal Code was registered in the town police station here and a probe has been undertaken.
