Mangalore, Nov 13: In order to provide treatment for the mounting cases of diabetes patients in recent years, Diabetes clinic was inaugurated at Conference Hall, 2nd Floor, A J Hospital & Research Centre on Saturday November 13.

Dr Mohan Alva inaugurated the centre.

In his speech he hoped that the newly opened full-fledged diabetes clinic serve the patients reaching its goal. He appreciated the role of A J Shetty hospital in medical sector. Even though diabetes cannot be eradicated completely, awareness can be created, he added.

Dr A Subrahmanyeshwara Rao, superintendent of police, Dakshina Kannada district, who was the chief guest said that diabetes is considered to be a social problem due to its intensity, rather than disease. Change of lifestyle among Indians has also contributed for more cases of diabetes, he added.

Dr Ramesh Pai, another guest in the programme said that according to ayurveda, diabetes is a metabolic disorder which leads to a tendency toward high blood sugar. People in India were aware of diabetes since ancient days. Shushruta, father of surgery practiced medicine and identified the treatment and origin of diabetes, he added.

Dr Ganesh H K, A J medical director gave a presentation on diabetes, causes and treatment methods.

A J Shetty, chairman, A J Group of Institutions presided. Prashanth Marla welcomed the gathering and Lidwin D’Souza delivered the vote of thanks. Reema, department of human resources conducted the programme.

    Hi, I am a 39 year old type 1 diabetic. I had the attack of this disease in early 80's when there was not much of a knowledge on this. I have been able to live a perfect life, married and mother of a 15 year old healthy son. I have been working eversince the completion of my studies and is perfectly in good health. I have been conducting classes and advising parents of affected patients as to how to lead a normal life minus sugar! If you need my assistance, I would be definitely happy to help you out. I have also been associated with the Diabetes asssociations in Malaysia. I have been a great source of relief and a proof to the parents of juvenile diabetes. Succesfully, I am working in one of the world's largest Airline, that too in Sales and have visited various countries including UAE, Bahrain, Muscat,Colombo, Malaysia and United Kingdom. The fact remains that many a times, I find it difficult to convince people that I have been a diabetic for the last 26 years!
