Konkani's Adventure in Visual Media - Tele-film ‘Konn Tho Amcha Modlo’

Mangalore, Nov 20: The onslaught of globalization on every ethnic culture has become incomprehensible. In this prevailing circumstances, the visual media, cinema, TV channels and internet have emerged as
powerful media of information that are effective in creating general awareness and knowledge base.

Even though, the Mangalorean Konkans are known to be adventurous and take risks, Only a few determveined take a go in this sphere. There are many instances, wherein a few Konkans who have ventured into this field, in order to enrich Konkani visual media have burned their fingers. It’s difficult to sustain as producers of Konkani TV serials and movies. The tele-film or a documentary also lacks the viewer’s patronage. A few Konkani movies such as ‘Dream Girl,’ ‘Bhagi Chor,’ have been successful while others have bombed badly. A tele-film ‘Jaigi Naka’ by Konkani dramatist and playwright Nellu Permannur likely to premiered in December 2010.

The producers in the Konkani sphere face the challenge of latest technical expertise, shortage of talented actors, above all the hefty investment. In this backdrop, Kingsley Nazareth, up and coming Konkani tele-film producer from Angelore parish has taken a bold stands in the field of movie-making since 1990.

Rony Crasta is the script writer of ‘Konn Tho Amcha Modlo’ Konkani tele-film who translated Kannada version of Rajendra Karant who in turn translated the original English detective novel of Christi’s ‘Mouse Trap.’  Kingsley Nazareth got the idea to make the tele-film based on this novel, with the objective of screening the movie to a wide spectrum of viewers.

The tele-film is the result of Kingsley’s daring act. Ivan D’Silva and Parameshwar G are the directors. Ivan has been trained under Badal Sarkar and renowned to attract the children to the art of acting. He is also an experienced artiste in a drama troupe. He is the trustee of Ayana Nataka Mane. Parameshwar is an expert cameraman and well versed in technical aspects. He has so far produced 106 documentaries and also runs a crash course on ‘How to make a film.’ Cajetan Dias is the music director. Sangeet Samrat Joel Pereira has composed title song for the tele-film.

The Storyline

The ‘Home Stay’ in Madikeri is a dwelling for visitors who frequent the dense forest and the ‘Poomale Betta’ a peak in the Western Ghats for trekking. A makeshift bridge across the heavily flooded stream is the only link to the outer world.  An elderly woman, the owner of this Home Stay lived a happy life with her son Babu and daughter-in-law Philomena until……… One fateful day, as the rain pouring heavily and the stream dangerously overflowing, there comes news of murdered of Esthel found near the stream.  Inspector Daniel D’Souza enters the Home Stay for the murder inquiry.

Suspiciously the makeshift bridge, the only link to the outer world collapses…  To make the things worse, the elderly woman is strangled to death  …The dangerously flowing stream with the collapsed bridge and the Home Stay are completely cut-off from the outer world.

How can an outsider commit these crimes? It has to be one of the ‘insider’ staying on the Home Stay!  Who could be the murderer/ Is it the self-styled Major Gopi?  Is it the glamorous journalist Matilda?
Or those playboys, Kiran or Alwyn?

The mystery goes on and the suspense grows..!

One has to watch the tele-film to resolve the mystery and to get to know the real criminal.

Konn Tho Amcha Modlo is produced by Nazareth Kutam, Padil, Mangalore, with a view to promote Konkani language and to entertain the Konkani viewers.

Target of 40 Shows Nazareth Kutam has the goal to organize 40 shows in different places of Karnataka wherever Konkani speaking people are spread out, of which 12 shows are already booked.

The tele-film can be exhibited in church premises, community halls, associations, wards, clubs, villages and anywhere you think possible at a very low cost of Rs 10,000 per show. This includes LCD, screen and sound system.  (The transportation will be charged extra for outside Mangalore.)

Further, the tele-film has already been staged several times in Mangalore with overwhelming response by the viewers. Nazareth Kutam has the objective to reach around 5 lac Konkani speaking people spread in Mangalore, Karwar, Udupi, Kodagu, Hassan, Chikmagalur and Shimoga districts. One can be a part of the venture by patronizing the tele-film through advertisements when screened in different places.

Advertisements will be screened in the beginning and intermission of the tele-film.
