Mangalore, Nov 23: Demanding the repeal of Prasar Bharati Act 1990 and dissolution of Prasar Bharati, employees of Akashvani and Doordarshan affiliated to the National Federation of Akashvani and Doordarshan Employees (NFADE) are on a two-day strike, duly paralyzing the broadcast of programmes by these two entities. Since 9 am today, they have taken up the 48-hour boycott of work, which will be on till 9 am on November 25.

On Tuesday November 23 morning, employees of both Akashvani and Doordarshan staged a demonstration in front of the local Akashvani Kendra, holding placards. They also raised slogans, demanding to meet their demands.

A release by the local unit of NFADE said that 336 Akashvani Kendras and 1,464 Dordarshan Kendras from all over the country would be taking part in the current agitation. The federation has accused the present chief executive officer of Prasar Bharati of providing a distorted picture about the current financial status of Prasar Bharati, as a result of which, the body has been deprived of financial assistance from the centre. It said that the CEO of Prasar Bharati had recently convinced the Group of Ministers that Prasar Bharati would be able to earn 50% of total expenditure on its own, which it has termed as unrealistic. The employees are worried about their own survival, in case the organization for which they work, meets natural death shortly hereafter, and hence, decided to take up this do or die battle, NFADE said.

“The current financial situation is such that even maintenance of transmitters, buildings and other basic infrastructure has been rendered difficult. Even the salaries of the employees are not being paid promptly. These bodies, which are run with the aim of serving the public, can not endeavour to compete with private channels and create their own revenue sources to meet the costs. Unless the government extends assistance, both these organizations may face closure soon,” NFADE stated. It also said that a 72-hour strike from December 13 to 16 will be organized if the government does not change its stand after the current agitation. It added that the proposed strike will be converted into an indefinite strike, if the response of the government continues to be lukewarm.

It may be recalled that at the recent national seminar held in the city under the aegis of NFADE, a resolution had been passed, urging the union government to immediately dissolve Prasar Bharati, which has been reduced into an organization that looks after the interests of a handful of people, and urging the government to take over the management of both the AIR and Doordarshan.

Mr. Chandrashekar, as a rightful leader of NFADE is also bent upon fooling the common public. He is forgetting that it is the same NFADE which had agitated to implement the PB act by which they received hiked salaries. He has also conveniently forgotten the fact that the Technical & Progg. employees had given an undertaking to the Govt. that they would refund all financial benefits enjoyed in the event of Prasar Bharati being taken over by the Govt. What does he have to say about this? Its really very convenient for him & others to enjoy all benefits and then when the time comes, retract from their words. How disgusting!!!!

Nagesh Maam i think you need to your knowledge. It is the CAG which spilled the beans on 2 G spectrum, and not your favourite channel. It was Shiva Sena which exposed the Adarsh housing Scam. The private channels only followed the stories from the leads provided by these. Arguing just for the sake of argument does not augur well to you and you are showing only your bias. . You would only do well to do know that exposing scandals and scams is not the only role of the media.

I dont think NFADE needs to answer people who come up with the single agenda point of discrediting AIR and DDK. Since there were some points raised by some enlightened citizens of the country, in daijiworld I thought it was our duty to clarify and we are happy that people have understood that we were forced to come to a stage where we had to close our transmission causing inconvenience to the public. But we were left with no other choice. Agitation is one of the ways of bringing the issue to the notice of the concerned. And we have succeeded in our mission. Jai ho NFADE

Sorry to hear regarding DD and AIR Channels to be Riped / Burn out/closed down. But still it is a fact that for the authentication of news or any happening this generation is still turning to the govenment supported channel. All the other private channels have their own interest related to TRP, without which servival of pvt channl is hard.Government(of the politicians)also funds these two organization for their own interest keeping behind the national interest at the back.
The negative stories aired about the CWG would created an illusion in common mans mind that it would not happen or India is not capable of staging the event of this magnitude. Where are those peopople, might again taking credits positively for creating the condition and the atmosphere which were condusive enough for the success of the CWG in India. Curruption is again clipped to success as an annexure.(Food for those to create immidiate stories as if the criminals are jailed after airing the justice of channel through the stories)

DD and AIR may be brought out with revamping but should be airing the government policies. Ethics to be followed by every channel by not crossing permitted limits
Any way strike of NAFADE has nothing to do with this. Whether repealing of prasar Bharati would improve quality of program or better utilization of funds?(Tax payer Money). It is not clear.
For now it is clear that one should strive for creating better conditions than existing.Hope for better.

Hasanmukha and Kishore have rightly pointed out about the role of Akashavani and DDK as public broadcaster. When Vazir and Nagesh talk about scrapping AIR & DDK it only shows their lack of knowledge or emptiness just like that of a frog in the well. . It is liking saying you scrap parliament, the state assembly, the military and all that because tax payer’s money is spent. They are talking about people having latest gizmos and satellite connections. Who are they talking about?. The city folks?. Or are they just talking about the mobiles? What about the people whom no other media reaches in as many languages and to as many sections of people and they are more than 50% of the people of this country.
When private media and television channels were expressing doubts about India’s ability to conduct commonwealth games by giving all negative publicity it was only Doordarshan and AIR which took the cudgels of projecting our image in the right perspective. And we did not have to exaggerate? So ultimately when India hosted the games successfully all these people who talked conducting the games had to eat an humble pie. How can one believe the press especially when the credentials of its high profile journalists has come under cloud now.
And to Vazir’s knowledge, the finances of AIR and DD are in a mess not because of employees but because of one man CEO Lalli who has been running the organization as if it is his private fiefdom. That is why we want the organization to be what it was before Prasar Bharati was implemented. His unlilateral actions have caused loss to the national broadcaster. Moreover what is the use of P B when service rules and autonomy is not given?
If earning revenues is only our criterion we don’t mind doing so. Let the government allow us to earn revenues and put restrictions on our spending (the power bills to run them are more than what we earn) . We will be read to provide 24 hours entertainment like it is being done by the private channels or the media which has no obligation towards anyone. Remember the paid for news resorted to by the press? Where is the credibility of such a media ?
As a national broadcaster the government asks us to serve the person who is on the topmost border of the country. More than what we earn is spent on providing service to these areas which are not reached by any other media. Will the private channels or the press do this at the cost of their profits?

Offcourse. We should retain Doordarshan and Akashavani. We can not forget our good old days when we had only these two sources of entertainment. TV and radio do not mean fun and entertainment. It is much more. All these private channels are worried abaout TRP only. They offer us news which is blown out of propotrion and some times with provoking statements. Are they giving us any programme which is educative and informative. Boycott useless reallity showsand support social causes. Real Indians should watch and listen govt sponsored channels.

One must understand the importance of govt.controlled Akashavani/Doordarshan,because they are not only for entertainment. Our country's security is at risk if we blindly say it is no more required. The private channels do not have that obligation to the nation. They are only for money.Make sensible comments, please. These are only drama by the higher ups.

People like vajir should understand that AIR & DD have public obligation and its aim is to 'EDUCATE, Inform and Entertain.
the AIR never considers the listener as a consumer.
where would you get programmes for farmers, students, Ladies, Classical music etc ?
This department is the voice of the nation and should not be driven by market forces.

Why should Govt be in the business of radio or TV broadcast? There are any number of private channels. It is high time, the Govt stopped funding all these white elephants. While Vividh Bharathi service of AIR is still quite popular, especially among armed forces working in difficult terrains, DD has nothing to commend for itself. Its quality, content and coverage, not to mention professionalism leaves much to be desired. Both these organisations are thriving on public funding through tax-payers money. As the employees themselves claim, the finances of AIR & DD are in a mess with even salaries not being paid promptly or time. They are not earning any revenues. Let both organisations be closed once and for all. RIP for AIR and DD
