Kaup, Dec 10: Some strangers succeeded in hoodwinking their customers and taking away gold ornaments and a mobile phone in two incidents which happened on December 8.

Three persons dressed like ascetics collecting alms, came to a house occupied by a Muslim family at Katapady Yenagudde. They moved around the house and because of their singing, a woman came out. The gang used smoke and ashes to mesmerize the lady who then placed the ornaments she was wearing and cash which she brought out from her house into a cloth-turned-bag which the thieves had hung from their shoulders.

Screengrabs from CCTV footage

After the thieves left, the woman came to her senses and realized that she was taken for a ride. CCTV footage showed the Fakirs moving round the courtyard and also in the town. The video clip of the incident has become viral.

In the other incident, a person who visited a fertilizer shop, acted like an honest man after doing business of over a thousand rupees. After the owner developed trust in him after some conversation, he said his WhatsApp number is not updated and sought the owner's number so that a medical prescription can be received from a friend. He borrowed his mobile phone for a brief period in the guise of using the prescription in the medical shop and never came back. Shop owner Uday Shetty, lost the mobile phone worth Rs 18,000 in this incident.

The locals and the police have searched extensively for the people involved with the two cases. Complaint has been lodged in Kaup police station.
