Mangalorean Ramya K Aithal Wins Brigade Group Special Mention Award

Mangalorean Ramya Aithal has been honoured with the Brigade Group and Rotary Bangalore Midtown Special Mention Award 2010. The award is presented annually in recognition of talents whose talents deserve special notice.

Apart from Ramya, four others, all from Bangalore, were conferred the Young Achiever Award: Pavithra, a 26-year old entrepreneur whose driving force is to provide IT and IT-enabled services with help of differently-abled people; Suraj Narredu, who at 25 years is the youngest Indian jockey; 19-year-old Rakesh Manpat, the first Karnataka shooter to win an international medal for India and Achala Paani, an animal welfare activist, founder and managing trustee of Let's Live Together.

The winners of the Young Achiever 2010 award were announced at a function held at the MLR Convention Centre in J P Nagar, Bangalore recently. Chief guest Prakash Padukone, former badminton world champion, M R Jaishankar, CMD, Brigade Group, and district governor, RID 3190, Rtn M N Suresh presented the awards, cash prizes and citations to the winners. The prize money for the award was increased to Rs 2 lac this year. There were 4 winners as there was separate category for sports and general category.

Apart from Ramya, Sharath Gayakwad also won the Special Mention Award.


About Ramya Aithal

16 years ago, Ramya underwent an operation for Hemangioma, and due to medical negligence she entered coma for 21 days, after which suffered disabilities except for her memory and her ability to hear. The 28-year-old girl has come a long way since then. She now holds an M A and M Phil in English and is a successful lecturer at Government P U College in the city. She is a self-sufficient woman who despite her limitations has been nurturing young minds.

Her journey hasn't been an easy one. Ramya's undying persistence and the unwavering support of her family have helped her overcome all obstacles. She is the epitome of courage and a source of inspiration for many.

Applications were received from all over the state, including national and international level achievers, areas of achievement that were represented covered a wide and diverse variety of domains.  While the most important criterion for selection was the applicant’s actual achievement, the selection committee also considered the applicant’s commitment to his or her field of endeavour and evidence of a continual pursuit of excellence.
 
All the applications went through several rounds of careful scrutiny and research and rounds of discussion with the core committee members of the Award. The short-listed applicants were invited to meet the jury on October 30.
