Mangalore may Get Make-over on Singapore's Sentosa Island Model

Mangalore may Get Make-over on Singapore's Sentosa Island Model

From Our Special Correspondent
Daijiworld Media Network - Bangalore

Bangalore, Dec 1: Can the coastal city of Mangalore, which is considered as one of the most hip-hop cities in Karnataka, ever hope to match Singapore or at least a part of that country in terms of tourist attractions?

Well, if Karnataka State Industrial and Infrastructure Development Corporation (KSIIDC) chairman N Yogish Bhat, who is the Mangalore MLA, and Coastal Development Authority chairman B Nagaraja Shetty, a former minister, have their way, Mangalore could well be on the way to be developed on the lines of the internationally famous Sentosa Island resorts in Singapore.

Though Singapore lacks natural seaside allure, Sentosa, a small island south of the city-state helps in filling up the void. The entire island has been transformed into a virtual leisure and recreation resort and Sentosa has several five-star resorts, spa, luxury accommodations and golf courses. It also offers underwold tourist attractions and exotic cuisine to cater to foreign tourists.

The two BJP leaders, who addressed a joint news conference in Bangalore on Wednesday December 1,  said the state government was seriously considering a proposal to develop Mangalore on the model of Singapore’s Sentosa Island resorts by establishing an aquamarine park, and a golf course and developing a ring road around the region on the public-private-partnership route.

Yogesh Bhat said the marine acquapark may be developed on a 25-acre area at an estimated cost of Rs 250 crore. The 18-hole golf course would be of global standards, which has acquired quite a fashion status among foreign tourists and corporate bigwigs, Nagaraj Shetty said.

Both the BJP leaders said developing Mangalore and transforming it into an attractive tourist destination would help in the development of the region without any environmental pollution and help the local people, who are known for their business acumen and enterprising qualities especially in hotels and hospitality sectors.

They said a 100-km ring road was proposed around Mangalore, including 30 km in the initial phases, and a feasibility study is under preparation.

The study report would be submitted to the State government in March, 2011. The estimated cost of all these infrastructure projects is more than Rs. 1,000 crore, they said adding tourism, residential and commerce complexes are planned to be developed around the ring road.

Once the ring-road was completed and thrown open to the traffic, the people of Kerala and others regions need not come to Mangalore for their onward journey, they said pointing out that tourists visiting the state need not go to Kerala to experience beach tourism.

Yogesh Bhat said that Town Planning scheme, on the lines of one existing in Gujarat, was proposed to be launched in Mangalore where residents would be made partners in development.

FOR ABOUT 10 YEARS I HAVE BEEN HEARING/READING NEWS ABOUT MANGALORE CORNICHE - NO BEGINING IS SEEN SO FAR!!!!!!

IF PLANNING AND INITIATING THE PROJECT TAKES 10 YEARS, COMPLETION MAY LIKELY TAKE 100 YEARS!

I HAVE VISITED ALMOST ALL MAJOR CITIES IN THE WORLD. DREAMING OF SENTOSA IS JUST FOOLING THE PUBLIC AT THE SAME TIME CALCULATING HOW MUCH SHARE CORRUPT POLITICIANS CAN SWALLOW !

SENTOSA/SINGAPORE IS A CLEAN PLACE - PEOPLE ALSO CLEAN. GOOD ROADS, GOOD PARKING AREAS AND ABOVE ALL IS HAVING A BEAUTIFUL AIRPORT . LAW AND ORDER SITUATION IS THE BEST.

YOU DO NOT HAVE TO GO TO SINGAPORE TO BUILD A CORNICHE. BOMBAY/CHENNAI/PONDICHERI MARINE DRIVES COULD BE ENOUGH TO GET AN INSPIRATION.

FIRST OF ALL FULL ATTENTION TO BE GIVEN TO MANGALORE ROADS, FOOTPATHS, DRAINAGE SYSTEM, GARBAGE CLEANING, TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT, CLEAN DRINKING WATER AND GOOD LAW AND ORDER SITUATION I.E. RULE OF LAW TO BE APPLICABLE EQUALLY TO EVERYONE.
LOKAYUKTHA HIMSELF A SUPREME COURT JUDGE, HE SHOULD HAVE FULL POWERS TO CATCH THE CORRUPT, TRY,AND SEND THE CORRUPT STRAIGHT BEHIND BARS? NO NEED OF CATCHING THE CORRUPT AND CONDUCT A DRAMA OF PRESENTING THEM IN THE COURT AND DELAYING CASES FOR YEARS?

IN CASE COMPETENT/CLEAN POLITICIANS WISH TO HAVE THE MANGALA CORNICHE IT COULD BE A RING ROAD FOR VEHICLES AND ALSO SIDE BY SIDE PROVISION FOR METRORAIL, GARDENS, HOTELS AND SO ON.

Politicians are expert in fooling innocent people. Mr Yogesh Bhat may be one of them. He knows very well that 99% of Mangalore people might not have seen Santosa Island. it is in Singapore. The whole island was once a cremation centre. You, first of all improve the cremetion centre at Nandigudde which is dirtiest place in Mangalore where the departed souls weep. You can go on fool people for a short time, but remember not all the time. It is only when educated people come forward and take active part in constructive criticisme, the the nation will prosper.Well! I had the priviledge of visiting Singapore & Santosa. Mangalore, with all these politicians will never become santosa for atleast 100 years.

As many have said lets have reliable & affordable electic power, decent roads & pavements, adequate parking. Perhaps then the Singaporeans will want to model their cities on Mangalore.

dear Readers, this is dream project don't underestimate this project one day Mangalore will become Singapore's Santos Island Model am sure. If this project will take 50 years then really this will hurt me becuase by the time I will bedcome old. since my childhood I have never seen any changes the city still we are having only one signal light near Komals even I did not drive my car more than 40Km/h in the city becasue of hell of holes in the road, no trafic rules,no padestarian walk. But we have to appreciate our politician atleast they wake up and said good thing before the election to do something change to develop Mangalore city like Singaproe or USA, no problem sir. KAHANE MAIN KYA HARJ HAI? on the reality this just a dream only.

If admin offices have rhodents, and the primate kingdom from the Philikula now migrates to the conference offices for proposing a Sentosa kind of project - that is where the problem.

    My humble request for these:
    1. Study the drinking water projects of Singapore, where de-salination through osmosis, spring water from mountains of Malaysia etc handled well.

    2. Study the Roads with Divider, Skirts, Pavements,Drainage lines and Cable conduits, of Singapore

    3. Road-side Trees and gardens for balancing the CO2 -> O2 cycle

    4. Make it compulsory for all the vehicles for emission control through compulsory Palladium and rhodium rings in the exhaust system

    5. Make building control regulations too rigid, so that proper structure is in place

    6. Minimize the health hazards such as Cholera, Malaria, Dengue etc through proper sanitation.

    7. Focus on best practises in the medical and academic fields so that Mangalore excels in these two sectors first. Doctors and clinics giving tablets in a toxic news paper, and handling them using dirty hands, handling thousands of patients in the same bed while observing in the clinic etc - no good.

    8. Study the flood control, drainage system of Singapore.

List goes on. let me list down what is unnecessary in Mangalore:

    1. Universal studio, 2. Casino, 3. Entertainment Centres 4. Golf Club 5. Night club, etc. These are for richNlazy class and does not suit our culture

Let Mangalore not be compared to being like Sentosa. Let it have its own identity. But yes, development is much needed. We could make Mangalore a tourist place. The roads make over is half done.Let there be a finish to any work or project that is started. Fly overs being built get shattered even before the bridge is completed. There's a need for sincerity in work which is lacking.A make over of roads, more sincere and faithful auto rickshaw drivers, the advantage of good hotels with amazing mangalorean cuisine, more resorts, more beautiful beaches, right of freedom to every mangalorean, and if every mangalorean mind their own business rather than indulging themselves in fights, corruption or destruction could make NAMMA KUDLA a wonderful place.

Just bury the garbage like the Ram sena and the moral goondas. Prevent antisocials like Mutalik from entering our city.......We can then overtake even Singapore.

Leave alone developing Mangalore in line with Santosa Islands of Singapore, first let them fill the path holes of Mangalore roads properly and efficiently!!

What a joke? This is another way of pocketing the entire amount meant for this project. What can we expect from these corrupt politicians & third grade contractors when they cannot provide us pothole free & most importantly garbage free roads.Look at our GHAT roads, look at our Mangalore-Bombay highway.I am at shock to read this article as all these most corrupt politicians of all parties are well aware that they have failed utterly & miserably to provide us basic infrastructure facilities. They are now dreaming on these projects to make quick money.Shame on all of us for giving a chance to all these politicians to pocket all our tax payers money & inernational aid funds meant for road development.I have to cancel my trip to Goa from my Udupi as I have been told that 30 km road from Batkal is completely damaged & it is impossible to drive on this road,& we are thinking that Mangalore coastel will be like Singapore.Let these politicians first think of providing basic toilet facilities before dreaming of creating tourism.

If wishes were horses, everybody can fly. Still, there is no harm in day-dreaming. Mangaloreans should consider themselves lucky if the present government takes steps to at least improve the infra-structure and all access roads to Mangalore, especially the Charmadi, Shiradi and Agumbe ghat roads. Let both Yogesh Bhat and Nagaraj Shetty pay special attention to this. Tourists can never drive down to Mangalore. They have to fly because even the train services are inadequate and it takes entire night or daytime travel to reach Mangalore from Bangalore.

STOP DREAMING GENTLEMEN! Start with the basics of giving roads without potholes, and footpath for the people to walk. Wherever there is a footpath, start by cutting the grass, which has grown taller than the humans living in Mangalore. This activity will cost Rs 250 only. Forget Rs250 cr.
